How to disable internal keyboard and make the POWER button works?

Dear all,

I spilled a little bit of water on the keyboard of MacBook Pro 13 Mid 2010.

As result, the left SHIFT button is seen sometimes as being pushed, therefore the Mac boots in safe mode and I can not use the os-x, since all operations are seen as with the SHIFT button being pressed.

I was reading a lot in the forum, but I can not replace the top case with another one. So I was thinking to:

- remove the keyboard cable from the logic board and use always an external usb keyboard. However, this method will not allow me to switch on the Mac.

Is there a way to connect the power button to some pins in the logic board to make the mac power up?

Thank you a lot!

hey man,

sorry for the annoyance you are experiencing. I have a couple things you can try..the part that concerns me is its the left shift key. The left shift, option and command keys are all tied in together and its possible its an issue on the logic board, not necessarily the keyboard. The only way to know for sure is dis-connect the keyboard, then plug in another keyboard via usb. If the external keyboard works no problem, chances are replacing the internal keyboard will fix the issue, although keep in mind liquid corrodes over time so the issue may re-surface. If it is the keyboard, I can also provide you some links to purchase a new one, but also a guide how to install (which I am in the process of creating anyways)

I've provided a link showing how to remove bottom case (it's 10 screws), just make sure you pay attention at the top which screws went where. It should be from L to R, short screw then 3 long If you put the long in where a short should be, you will screw into the optical drive (don't recomend this! lol)

the keyboard connects via a flex cable. What you want to do is lift the lever and pull it out. Just be very careful to not damage the lever/arm. The photos below show you:

Update

one last thing to mention, you will need to boot the machine from the power pads on the logic board. If you can post a photo of your logic board in that lower corner near the keyboard (just edit your question and use the "Images" tab in the lower left hand corner of the screen, I will post the photo back with the power pads circled. It's very easy to do

Hi Josh and thank you very much for your fast and complete reply!

I open it up and my macbook pro has the same logic board as in this post: Sustitución de la placa lógica del MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010

if you need a close picture I will take it. Once found the power pads on the logic board, do I have to shor-circuit them? or what should I do?

- de

Hi which pins do I need to short out?

If you use an Apple USB keyboard, you may have a power button built-in (early versions shipped with CRT iMacs), or you can press Control-Eject (the underlined upward pointing triangle key at the upper right corner) to send a power signal. (I don't have your model to verify that it will work, but its worth a try - much easier than jury-rigging a connection to the logic board).

if you take a look at the question I posted you'll see a picture and I explain it. Not sure if your board looks the same as mine but usually they are larger than the other and looks like silver pads.

Most likely it's the logic board. The damage is where the keyboard connects to the board.

Temp solution is when powering on press another key and hold it.

You can then use a usb keyboard!

Are you saying that if you hold any key down on the internal keyboard of the Macbook Pro that it disables the internal keyboard?

I am already using a usb keyboard. Your comment, "You can then use a usb keyboard" implies that you have to press any key on the internal keyboard while booting up in order to be able to use an external usb keyboard.

Please elaborate. I have the same problem as the OP. For at least the time being, I just need a way boot up without it always going into safe mode.

Thanks...

@Robert Davis - Sadly, this is not correct. You'll need to pop off the bottom cover to gain access to the power pads which you can short across (acting as the power button).

I kinda figured that. I solved the problem by pasting the keyboard deactivation code into terminal.

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBTopCase.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBTCKeyboard.kext

After doing so my Macbook Pro booted up in standard mode.

Here are pictures of me starting my mid 2010 MacBook Pro from the logic board. http://db.tt/lXy8z3GJ. Please be careful. They are near the keyboard flex ribbon. If it doesn't work with the battery plugged in unplug battery connector and plug only Into AC power. My model has this problem because of water damage that seems to have affected the relationship between power button and battery. If at any point after starting up you can use your power button , perform an SMC reset. Hope this helps.

I too had a spill on my laptop causing a few letters to not work or randomly press themselves. I purchased an external keyboard with a built in trackpad.

I was able to disable my trackpad and most of the keyboard keys by doing the following:

1. Go into System Preferences

2. Select Universal Access

3. Click Mouse & Trackpad

4. Turn Mouse keys on

5. I enable "Press option key 5 times to turn Mouse Keys on or off"

6. Click ignore trackpad when mouse keys is on

Doing the above turned off most of the letter keys but still allowed the music control keys at the top of my keyboard to still work.

My logic board is different [ I've also experienced dead keyboard ].

https://mega.co.nz/#!dFcQCKoa!cWsDGQ90Qw...

On my board, these pins was covered with protective insulant, so I have to scratch it.

But it didn't start. I have to reset also SMC ( system managment console )

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

If bottom case is removed, you can alternately reset SMC by disconnecting both power adapter and main battery, and holding down power button for 5 seconds.

It can be the Keyboard assembly, or the flex cable between the keyboard and the mother board.

1. You can check the flex cable where is bending 180 degrees and see if there is any sign of breaking.

2.check if you insert the flex cable in the correct way in to the keyboard assembly.

3.If you want to be 100% sure that the computer is working without the keyboard you can strap this 2 pins (picture attached) and you laptop it should be starting.

I'm having a similar issue, where my shift key was always being registered as pressed. I replaced my keyboard and everything worked properly for about two weeks before the problem came back. I now have Karabiner installed, but I'd prefer to find a more permanent solution. Is it possible that reflowing the solder on my logic board could help (this worked when I had the black screen of death)? Thanks!!
