SATA Cable not working? Constant read/copy errors like Error 36

Hi,

I purchased a dual hardrive kit for my Mac Mini late 2012 model from iFixit. I had an SSD on the upper bay connected to the motherboard with the original Apple cable that came with the Mini and a HDD connected to the motherboard with the iFixit SATA cable.

The SATA cable worked perfectly in that setup. I recently upgraded the HDD with an SSD and now I get constant read/copy errors like Error 36.

I have tried to reformat the drive and also used the ‘‘Dot Clean’’ terminal command to fix it but with no luck.

When I connect the same SSD with a casing via USB, it works perfectly well. The only problem that could occur is with the iFixit SATA cable.

Do you have a fix for it or do you recommend another SATA cable from your store?

Thanks

Update (07/02/2019)

Replacing the upper sata cable has solved the problem. There was no damage to the cable. It was the one with the number 821-1347-A which apparently works only for HDDs. You need the faster 821-1501-A for an SSD to run well. The mac mini is up and running successfully with dual SSDs. Thanks for the help! :)

What are the SSDs you are using (Make & Models)

Hi Dan...There is a Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB which has the OS on it, connected to the motherboard with the Apple sata cable on the upper bay and a Samsung 860 QVO 1Tb connected with the iFixit cable in the lower bay...

OK, both SSD are good ones! I only use Samsung drives my self.

To clarify the 821-1347-A cable is the older SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) cable not the newer SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) cable. This cable was used in the older Mid 2010 not the Mid 2011 and 2012 models which have SATA III support and need the better cable. Your new SSD needs the better cable unlike your older HD which likes was a SATA II drive or just not a high performance SATA III drive.

I'm happy you got the system running!

I got the slower SATA II cable with the iFixit kit which was meant for the Mac Mini Late 2012 a few years back. I guess back then they included the slower cable with the kit.

One of the problems you can encounter is the cable breaks down which can cause errors when the I/O is heavy.

Often times the folding of the cable is the issue as many people put a hard fold (putting in a crease) into the cable which you don’t want and that damages it.

I fear you’ll need to replace the cable and this time you’ll need to handle it a bit better. What I do is use a BIC pen ink straw (or a bamboo skewer) to help me shape the arc of the radius for the places the cable needs to bend around the corners.

I would recommend you replace both cables as it not easy to tell which one is failing:

Once you get the cables replace I would strongly recommend you backup the drives and reformat them both so you know you don’t have any file corruptions present and then restore the files from your backup. I would first setup an OS installer on a USB Thumb drive How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive. I don’t recommend going to the newer MacOS’s on SATA based systems as they alter the file system from HFS+ to APFS. While it is a better file system for SSD’s its not good with SATA based drives! Basically, you give up two to gain one type of problem.

If the cable was damaged then the hdd would not work as well. I put the HDD back to check and it works perfectly. The issue is more with quality of the cable. I have handled the cable with a lot of care so I am sure I haven't damaged it. I bought this kit about 3 years ago so I would like to know if there is any difference in quality of the cable? or is it the same cable?

Not so fast! It's not that simple ... The issue here is the data flow through the cables to the logic board.

Your HDD data flow is a very slow in comparison to your SSD's. The SATA designation SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) is like the design of the highways which in the states are mostly designed to allow cars to travel at 90 MPH! (Thats not the speed limit that's the roads design limit!)

So... if the highway was new it would make a great race track! Now lets say the road is old and has tons of pot holes and patches you would be crazy trying to drive at the roads design speed! And maybe it would be difficult to even travel at the speed limit in the middle of a snow storm too, Right??

Thats the best way to think this. The I/O pathway is 6.0 Gb/s but the cables condition is not able to support the full I/O at 6.0 Gb/s the SSD's can push unlike your HDD which won't push the I/O flow that heavily.

The SATA cables have not changed for either. I just reviewed my stock and checked my other parts suppliers listings as well.

The quality of the cables is very good, but the bending kills them!

Trust me I've replaced a few as people have over bent them damaging the thin foil wires inside.

Yes, I understand that the speeds are much higher in an ssd. I will try with a new cable that I can find here in India as it will take too long to ship from the USA. I need to get my computer up and running as soon as possible. I did not bend the cable along the dotted line to not put pressure on the bends. Until the new cable gets here I will try and see if I can fix the bends on this cable and see if that solves the issue. Thanks a lot for your time and help. Really appreciate it! :)

Is there like a dedicated cable for faster speeds or is the sata cable generic? Would it be fine to post a link of the cable available here as I don't have the possibility to get one shipped from the USA. Just to get an opinion if they are good enough?
