Remove negative terminal wire from battery

Using a multimeter on DC setting, or a 12v bulb with leads, test between negative battery post and the negative wire you removed, you should see some voltage or light from the bulb, remove each fuse one at a time and check to see if you still have volts or light. When you no longer have volts you have found your bad circuit.

I keep getting 12v reading when I disconnect the negative cable from battery and put my leads between post and cable.

Ok now go to your fuse box and pull out a fuse and check your readings again, when you have found the bad circuit you will have zero voltage.

Hi @mike8888 ,

Perhaps you should have said to select DC Amps 10A range to read the current flow between the wire and the negative post, i.e. Ammeter in series with the wire.

The DC Amp scale (and the meter's DC Amp lead connection - on most meters 1 connection for 10A range and another for up to 200mA) may need to be adjusted to get a more accurate current flow reading.

A light bulb may not give a true indication of the total amount of current flowing (unless it is extremely bright) as there will always be some current flowing.

There will always be a current flow (80-100mA) due to the electronics found in most modern cars, e.g. security alarm if installed, clock, immobiliser, ECU etc.

This amount should not flatten a battery overnight as a lot of batteries have capacities >45000mA

Hi @mwboyd2014 ,

Have you checked that the output from the alternator is correctly charging the battery?

With the engine idling check that the voltage across the battery terminals is in the range 13.8VDC to 14.5VDC.

Anything less than 13.8VDC indicates that the battery is not being charged properly and may actually be discharging while the engine is running, helping the alternator to supply the necessary electrical power to the car.
