Part of my keyboard backlight isn' t working?

so I spilt some nail dehydrator and it flooded into just my space bar but thankfully it dries super quickly like acetone basically. But now only the rightish upper side of my keyboard lights up. How is this solved and should I fix this? Or would this be too difficult to do? Also I have done a SMC reset and nothing was fixed.

The keyboard backlight is a simple assembly of three sheets where there are 6 leds projecting light. Leds can’t be replaced but backlight sheet can be easily found for sale online and it comes pretty cheap. Replacing that can be a bit challenging instead, as to access it you have to remove all and everything from the topcase, logic board, I/O board, battery and speakers too, but it can be surely done, depending on your care and patience. Here you can find all the guides you need to get an idea of what needs to be done.

At this point I think you’ll need to live with it. Otherwise you’ll need a new keyboard which is a big job.

so there isn't a way to just get the LED's replaced?

While the backlight plate could be replaced on its own, I fear you have deeper damage that you just haven't seen. If you are going this far it just makes sense replacing the keyboard as well.

I'm with @danj on this if the keyboard doesn't get worse. I looked up what common nail dehydrator uses and it uses 2 chemicals that melt plastic; one might and the other is known to. They both seem to be acetone derivatives or closely related. The concentration in the one I referenced is strong enough I have a feeling it won't end well based on the MSDS. No MSDS for this one, but it still has ethyl acetate.

The cause of failure will easily complicate keyboard replacement, making it hard to avoid damaging the keyboard if you aren't careful.

I would be more concerned about killing your keyboard at a physical level over killing half the backlight. The backlight isn’t essential and you can live without it, but if the keyboard dies you’ll need a palmrest (keyboard is riveted in on this model) to fix it.

See how your keyboard lasts for at least the month from when you did it. If it continues to work, live with the damage and consider yourself lucky. If it gets worse, you need a keyboard or palmrest. The stuff they put in nail primer isn’t much better then acetone in the amount of raw damage done.

I'm not really worried about the liquid damaging my laptop because it was nail dehydrator which dries in a couple of seconds so any damage done would have already happened.

Ethyl Acetate isn't exactly much less damaging then acetone. Isobutyl Acetate isn't much better since it's able to dissolve most plastics.

If it holds up, you may be able to get away with a new backlight sheet if the layers aren't frosted over. To see if that's the case, remove 1-2 keys but don't mess with the space bar.

why not the space bar? also, what do you mean by frosted over?

- de

The space bar is error-prone if you get it wrong. Frosted being the plastic is no longer completely clear and has a frosted look, since it was "melted" in the process.
