MacBook Pro internal screen doesn't work but an external monitor works

Hey all,

My Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) has a problem. The screen is black when I boot it up, but when I plug it in to my external monitor it works.

Things I tried:

  • Reconnecting LVDS cable
  • PRAM reset
  • SMC reset
  • Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and reconnecting it again.
  • Removed and re-inserted RAM sticks.

I don't know what I can do at the moment. Are there more things I can try or should I get a screen replacement?

Shine a flashlight through the Apple logo in the lid are you able to see your desktop and the icons?

Hey Dan,

Thanks for your quick reply. No, I don't see any icons or my desktop.

Turn off the system and disconnect the LVDS cable take a picture of both the cable (both sides) and the logic board so we can see the connections as I'm suspecting there's some damage Agregar imágenes a una pregunta existente

Well the good news is the cable and the logic board connector are in good shape. I don't see any broken pins or other physical damage. I assume you've reseated the connection and it still is not working.

The bad news is you can still have a bad display or the logic board is damaged.

Can you tell us a bit more on what happened before the display failed. Did the system get a bang or get wet?

What does System Report show for the display under Graphics/Displays (it may not be listed). Also, I would run diagnostics to see if any errors popped.

At this point I would use a spare display, carefully plugging it in to see if it worked. If it does that cinched it! If not the logic board output switching logic has problems.

Hey Dan,

Thanks for your response. The laptop got dropped and after that I didn't got any video on my screen. Under the tab "Graphics/Displays" I only saw my external monitor. I will run a diagnostic test later today and I will let you know the results.

I tried to run the diagnostic test, but I got an error. It said: Cannot load "EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.EFI/". What should I do?

You'll need to patch your diagnostics to fix it Fixing Apple Hardware Test (AHT)

The cable if probably dead or the connector is if there is no picture. The GPU might also be dead. If that is the case, get it to a shop with board repair or replace the screen cable/connector.

The 13" MacBook Pro's don't use a dedicated GPU the built-in graphics engine within the CPU is used. Besides an external monitor works so that rules that out.
