Maytag Gas Dryer Shuts Down after 10 Minutes

I have a Maytag Gas Dryer Model MGDC200XW2 about 8 years old.

The dryer starts and runs properly for about 10 minutes and then shuts off completely. It will not restart for about 5 - 10 minutes - presumably until some part has cooled down/reset.

After waiting for 5 or 10 minutes one pushes the start button and the dryer runs again for another 10 minutes or so.

The clothes dry eventually but it may take 3 or 4 rounds to get them there.

I have thoroughly cleaned the duct work and innards of the dryer.

The burner ignites with no problem and cycles on and off during operation.

I have replaced the cycling thermostat twice in 8 months but the problem persists.

Obviously the thermal fuse is OK and the Hi Temp thermostat(s) have continuity (when cool).

Whatever the problem is it appears directly related to temperature. Something gets too hot and shuts off until it cools and resets.

My “research” on the Internet suggests the following possible causes.

1) High temp thermostat(s) are tripping - But why? They are supposed to trip if too hot. Why would they be getting too hot? Can they “partially’ fail - i.e. trip at a lower than design temperature?

2) Motor is over heating and its thermal protection is tripping

3) Gas valve solenoids may be malfunctioning when they get warm - But will this shut down the whole machine or just the gas to the burner?

Is there something else that I should be looking for?

I plan to run the machine with the back off so that I can check if the high temp thermostats are tripping. When the dryer shuts down after 10 minutes I will immediately check the high level thermostats for continuity. If there is no continuity it will indicate that the high temp thermostats are what caused the shut down. I would be tempted to replace them as the new cycling thermostat is presumably cycling the burner off at a temperature that is lower than the design setting on the high temp thermostats.

If the high temp thermostats have continuity immediately after the machine shuts down I will direct my attention to the motor and check it for continuity when it is “hot”. If there is no continuity in the motor this will indicated that the thermal protection in the motor has tripped.

I will also try and check for continuity in the solenoid coils for the gas valve while they are hot. This could be challenging as access to them if from the front of the machine and the front needs to be on the dryer when it is running.

If I could be sure that problems with the gas valve solenoids do not mean the whole machine shuts down (rather than just the gas to the burner) there would be no need to check or change them as they are unlikely to be the source of the problem.

Feel the output of your dryer vent, you have probably missed something that is blocking the airflow.
