iPhone 6s home button working but not clicking

After fixing a broken screen the home button no longer clicks when fitted to the iphone. The clicking mechanism still works if I press it without shield over it. When I switch phone it works out of case also including touch ID. Tried loosing the screws - but doesn’t make a difference. Feels like the shield should be further down to make better contact, however all photos of the repair show what I’ve done looks correct. Second repair of this same phone. No probs last time. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

if you think its not making contact against the back plate then put a slight bend in the plate and tighten it up, or check the black dot on the back of the button is in the centre, if not then work it over until it is.

Thanks for your reply. I put a slight bend in plate and tried again, however still not joy. There isn't a black dot. I think it might have been worn away (?). I have a new, replacement home button (with the dot), however having the same problem (plus I can't use touch ID with this one).

Phone fixed. Took it to a mobile phone shop. The original home button was missing the black dot on back so this was replaced. Also the mental plate was replaced. £15 down but now working at least.

I had this problem as well and I figured it out :)

The black dot was in the center on the home button so that wasn’t my problem at all. Instead, the click strength of the home button all has to do with how tightly the home button bracket is screwed! My issue was that the home button clicked when barely touching it. I could brush my finger across the button and it would activate. Very annoying.

To resolve, see the iFixit iPhone 6s screen replacement guide, see Step 24 for “Home Bracket Assembly” - Reemplazo de pantalla de iPhone 6s.

There are 3 screws for the home assembly. 2 on the right, 1 on the left. These three screws are what controls how much, or how little, the home button will click (if at all).

Test the home button click strength BEFORE you lay down the replacement screen on the device and fasten it in place! Otherwise you will have to take apart the iPhone again.

  • If there is too much click, ever so slightly tighten one of the home button assembly screws, test the click. If still not good enough move on to the 2nd screw and tighten it ever so slightly, test, and so on until the home button clicks just right.
  • Follow the same process if there is almost no click. This means you need to loosen the screws. Loosen one screw, test the click, repeat on each screw until you get the right click strength.
