Help! Fell into pool w/ iPhone in pocket, now no backlight.

I recently fell into the shallow end of my saltwater swimming pool with my iPhone 6S (A1688) in my pocket. I stood up and got it out in probably about 5 seconds, turned it off and wiped it off with a towel and then immediately buried it in a bowl of rice for probably an hour while I researched the best way to handle the situation. Within an hour, I took it out of the rice (not the best solution, apparently) opened it up, removed a very small amount of visible water on the surface of the 2 large IC chips and then surrounded it top, bottom, and sides with silica gel packets, put it in the microwave (don’t worry, I didn’t turn it on) with a small fan directed at it and closed the door almost all the way. This kept the light on, which generated a little heat and warmed up the inside of the microwave and also allowed air to circulate to help remove moisture. I left it like this for 2 full days and then inspected it closely. I only found a small amount of apparent corrosion on a couple of the contacts on the lower digitizer cable connector. I cleaned these contacts with Caig DeoxIT D5 and then tested the phone. When I turned it on, I could barely see the Apple logo only if I held it under a light source. Other than that it appeared to work, making all the appropriate noises indicating push notices, text messages, incoming calls, etc., just no backlight to light up the screen.

Is there a likely fix for this that I can do, or would it require microsoldering? Any idea what it might cost? If needed, what’s the best way to find a competent repair person in my area (Pasadena, CA) who could fix this problem?

Thanks for reading this long, rambling missive and thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

Gary

It’ll require micro-soldering to repair the backlight circuit on this logic board.

There is corrosion under the shields which are soldered on the logic board so it would require a hot air rework station to remove these shields properly (micro-soldering).

I’m in Australia so I don’t have much suggestions on where to bring it to other than Rossmann Repair Group in NY or iPad Rehab

The likely case is that this is a microsoldering repair—the backlight circuit is a board level hot spot. But you do have a chance that you just have a bad screen. It might be a fun project to see if a new screen will solve the problem. You never know!

Hi Jessa, thanks for your reply.

I tried replacing the screen with a new one from iFixit over the weekend on the chance that it might be that simple. Unfortunately, no luck - the problem remained.

Is there anything I can or should do to the main board to prevent any continued corrosion? Would it help to remove it and rinse it in distilled water followed by an alcohol bath?

One more data point I forgot - after drying it for 2 days and b4 turning on I plugged it into the charger. Within about a minute the upper heat shield was almost too hot to touch. I unplugged it at that point. It still had enough charge to power on.

After watching your "M/S 101: Water Damage and Corrosion" video I assume the main board will also need a dunk in the ultrasonic cleaner, right? Since the phone is still opened up, could I just remove the main board and mail it to you for repair, or do you not have any way to bench test it without the entire phone?

Any idea of the range of cost for this repair?

Thanks again,

Gary
