Hi, my iphone started randomly overheating yesterday, it’ll overheat to the point where i have to let my phone cool down, now my flash, and camera are not working, screen dims to 50%. do you think it’s software or Hardware related? or do i just need to install a new battery? (Battery Health: 83%)

There are some thermistors (heat sensors) on the logic board in various areas to automatically disable the phone if excess heat is detected. Normally you will see a thermometer icon on the screen if this is the case.

If your phone is indeed overheating, that points to a hardware issue and is most likely a bad modular component which is causing excess current draw and hence, heat. You will need to either troubleshoot this yourself of have it looked at by an experienced third party technician as Apple won’t touch this.

I would open up the device and disconnect the rear camera (battery first!) and then test the phone to see if it still overheats. If it still does, then progressively remove other components such as the front camera and buttons until the problem goes away. If none of that helps, then the issue could be logic bard related which would require a micro-soldering repair instead.

i wouldn’t be surprised if the camera is the problem, thank you, the heat made my phone incredibly laggy

I did some tests, and i think it’s hardware related, i disconnected the camera and it still gets excessively hot. it gets extremely hot at the camera lens. is there a IC for the camera?

- de

If you disconnected the camera (and presumably removed it) how could it get hot? Are you referring to the lens on the back cover ?

- de

it’s the rear camera, once i took it out, it stopped excessively getting hot, (still got hot but, it was hot to the touch) but the camera still works.

but it was not hot to the touch*

It’s hardware related, and no, a battery won’t normally start causing overheating, but it could possibly be an issue to this. If your phone has never been opened, you might not want to do this as you will lose your IP67 water rating. But, if you wish to lose this, I mean, if you would rather lose this rating for trying to fix the problem, go ahead. This could also be the problematic Audio IC chip found with many iPhone 7 devices.

Another option: You can trade your phone in for a new iPhone 7 for as low as $200 from Apple with Apple Give-Back if you wish to skip the hassle of repair.
