Where does this cable go?

Hi.

I am installing a OWC cable into my 27” iMac Mid 2011.

I have dismantled it and decided to remove the logic board as it was absolutely filthy and full of thick dust.

I removed the left fan and removed the two cables that are hosted in the groove:

  • Left Speaker cable (Long)
  • Small sensor cable? (I believe it goes to the HDD).

Is there any reason why it would be down in that region? I found it plugged into the logic board, but the other end in the silver aluminium frame right at the bottom to the left of the fan.,

To rectify it, where should I stick the sensor end?

I should also add that I have put an OWC in line cable to the main HDD, as I am moving away from the Apple HDD. It comes with a sensor already which I stuck to the underside of the new HDD.

Please see the photo.

Many thanks!

OK, lets see if we can unravel things here:

First the original HDD Apple shipped in your system was a special drive Apple contracted from the drive makers. Basically, the maker tied the internal test thermal sensor into the SATA data services (extending the SMART output with a proprietary value). There is no external thermal sensor unlike the older iMac drives (2009)

If you replaced the HDD for an off the shelf HDD or SSD you have need to add the OWC In-line sensor for the system to suction properly (your sensor in your picture is someones home-brew setup). So I would say the HDD your system presently has now was installed as a replacement for the original drive the system had. The sensor needs to be attached to the drive case near the head area (one of the hotter locations of the drive).

I’m not sure I follow what drive you are planning on installing into your system. If I didn’t know better it sounds like you are attempting to install a used drive from an older iMac. The 2009 drive had a stuck on sensor, where the 2010 models used the built-in sensor like the 2011 drives. But the 2010 drive used a 3rd cable connection so it could be accessed by the logic board.

So what is the source of this new drive you are planning on installing? Any new HDD or SSD will need the OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for iMac 2011 Hard Drive Upgrade.
