Keyboard problem MacBook Pro 13" 2012

Hello anyone,

I have a keyboard problem on my Macbook pro 13" 2012 with macOS Mojave 10.14.3 .

So example when i try to type 5 I get 5è, or if I try to press the right arrow I get 8, or if I try to press the up arrow I get 9”.

Does anyone know if is a software problem or there is a way to reset keyboard's drivers.

Thanks.

Hello and thank you all,

I think it's a hardware problem, I did a test in a virtual machine with a linux distribution and I had the same problem, then I connected an external apple keyboard and it works without problem.

Also with the keyboard viewer I had no problems.

Advice on where to buy a keyboard to replace it?

Update (03/21/2019)

Hi everyone,

I solved my problem by replacing the keyboard with a new one.

Thanks to everyone for the support.

i had the same problem. but only the key 5 , p , g . i found out when i press (option + 5 )key it shows the right character ,so i thougth was a hardware problem, so i try with a external keyboard and it was working perfectly , so after to many tests . i make the deccicion to just replace the keyboard but befor order the parts i did my last try, i have an other macbook pro 15' mid 2012 i just switch the ssds and start it to work again like normal . no problems so i just cloned and installed the ssd in my macbbook and now it works p-erfectly.

i hope it work for somebady whit the same issue.

It sounds like a faulty keyboard but it might as well be a logic board issue, there’s no way to tell for sure without further tests. You can try resetting SMC but it won’t probably make any difference. Further and cheapest step would be to buy a replacement keyboard and see if it works correctly. If the issue persists it might be the IC handling the keyboard is damaged and needs replacement. Has the Mac suffered liquid damage in the past ?

Fact that is a hardware issue doesn't necessarily imply the fault is with the keyboard, however that's the cheapest way to attempt to find a solution with a modular approach. As far as the replacement is concerned that depends on what your expectations are..if you were a writer you'd probably hate an aftermarket keyboard and would be advisable to look for a working used original. If you can settle with a lower quality feel, you can buy the replacement with an eye to price, I'm afraid that's more or less all the difference you can find between sources.

I'm a web developer, what do you suggest me ?

@mrfrancesco I'm not into any kind of code writing, hardware is my daily bread, no idea on how fast your fingers fly on the keyboard, but I have a feeling a used original keyboard would better respond to the needs of someone spending several hours a day pressing keys though.

To add to @arbaman answer, enable the keyboard viewer from your keyboard prefs so you can pull it from the menu bar.

Then see if the key you are pressing is registering as the same key from the systems perspective. You should be able to delete the keyboard input and re-install it as well within the keyboard control panel.
