Hard Drive makes clicking noise then restarts laptop?

Hi, so when I attempted to restart my computer it came up with windows updating dont shut down computer but was on that for over an hour and forced restarted bu holding down the power button.

Now when I try to turn on the msi laptop my hard drive makes a clicking noise and restarts computer to do the same thing over again as seen in this video I made:

Does anyone know how to fix this or recover my data?

Also do you think it's safe to keep using hard drive if it is possible to fix?

Thank you in advance!

You are between a rock and a hard place here ;-{

Your drive has a mechanical problem (unable to index which is the clicking sound). It needs very specialized skills & tools to fix it enough to salvage the data off of it.

If you don’t have a backup of the data then you’ll need to send the drive out to a data recovery service like Drive Savers. I’ll warn you it won’t be cheap!

I would stop trying to fix your drive at this point as all you’re doing is making it worse!

Yah it sucks :( it's hard to backup data all the time due to all the massive amounts of tb's I have, so you have any good easy way to backup data so this doesnt happen in the future?

Yah I dont have much money for Drive Savers but do you think that's my only resort I can do?

Do you think me forcing shutdown caused this issue even though my computer seemed frozen what would you have done if your computer seemed frozen on a windows update to prevent this next time?

I use a couple of different methods to make sure I don't spend hours doing it and also make sure I have my bases covered.

To start with I use a two drive setup on my desktop systems. The first drive is my System & App drive, and the second is my active data drive. By having them separate I can back them up independently. As my apps aren't being altered that much I can limit the amount of times I do it. The data drive is the one I focus on as its data often gets altered. Even still I only focus on my active work as my iTunes music and vids are always available as well as my iBooks and other written (PDFs) libraries are either static or recoverable. This reduces my daily backup to a less than 30 mins.

On my laptops I follow the same process but unlike my desktops I use independent partitions. But you do need to be careful! Your system leverages your drive for virtual RAM, caching and paging. So you need to have the boot drive with enough free space to give your OS some elbow room. I mostly do a 2/3 partition for the boot volume and 1/3 for my data drive. Unlike my desktops I limit my static data to an external drive.

As far as my backup drives I have two rotation sets. The first is swapped out between my home and my safety deposit box at the bank! As you never know. I rotate this set monthly. The second set is my daily backup set. Both are RAID drives.

BTW - You didn't cause your drive to fail by forcing the system to shutdown. It was in trouble already which is why your system froze up.

Something probably broke in it i would recommend you upgrading to a SSD.

Yah I should but what should I do to recover the data from this drive?

I am not sure you would be able to but you can try buying a external hard drive adapter and boot from that. I home it works!

I will try that when I get home I will let you know if that works. fingers crossed.
