3-minute boot loop, with a black Apple logo. Help?

After battery and screen replacement on my daughter’s 5S (my first time with IFIXIT), the phone just keeps rebooting (boot looping) at about 3 minute intervals. Black apple on white screen, but nothing else, which is evidently rare. Virtually all the boot looping cases I’ve found in forums involve other recurring problems, like blue or red screens or bars, and often the answer is based on the color or bar issues.

The new IFIXIT battery was charging slowly and discharging fast, and its displayed charge level was erratic, but that problem cleared up when I put the old/original battery back in.

I’ve followed all the advice that seemed to apply, but nothing gives me more than 3 minutes of phone use at a time.

I have until tomorrow to get this thing working or get a new phone, which feels like accepting defeat after so many hours of repairing and troubleshooting.

I’d think you received a faulty battery, it may happen and the old battery test seems to confirm that. Get in touch with iFixit support, explain them what happened as you did here and ask for replacement, that will probably solve the issue.

Putting the old battery back in the phone didn't have any effect on the boot loop problem, though as I said it did at least fix the battery display problem. So, yeah, that new battery is defective.

I also put the old (cracked) screen back in the phone, but alas, that did not fix the boot loop problem either. I ended up having to buy a new phone. :-(

@drjeff Well, symptoms, in absence of a chance to test circuitry, are indeed quite important, as much as a reading on a multimeter. If the bootloop was there with new _and_ old battery a logic board issue is very likely. Being an older iPhone 5S, I find the choice of a new phone very reasonable.
