Why won't my headset work?

My headset won’t work anymore. Any ideas why?

My Problem:

My Sennheiser headset will not work at all with my XBox.

Weirdly, I got some sound (chat only; left ear only) initially with the Sennheiser when I started having this issue, but couldn’t get the option to output game audio to headset, nor would the audio balancing (Game <-> Party) option appear on the menu.

Most of the time since the issue appeared, XBox has been unable to even detect that a headset was connected.

Please don’t bother with trivial suggestions like “restart your Xbox“ or “try re-plugging your headset“. I’m a software engineer; trust me, I’ve done the completely trivial steps.

Other Background Info:

  1. I have been using this headset for months without issue, so it’s almost certainly not a compatibility problem. And I’m using the 3.5mm jack anyway.
  2. The Sennheiser has separate mic and audio jacks. I combine them using a female mic + female headphone -> combined male adapter.
  3. The Logitech headset has a unified jack.
  4. My PC has separate female mic and headphone ports. When using the Logitech headset on the PC, I use a combined female -> male mic + male headphone splitter

Hardware Info:

  1. XBone X
  2. Headset #1: Sennheiser PC 360 Special Edition w/ 3.5mm combiner.
  3. Headset #2: Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum w/ 3.5 splitter. (That splitter link is not the one I use. Not that that matters.)

Troubleshooting:

So far, I have:

  1. Reconnected the headset multiple times.
  2. Soft rebooted XBox
  3. Hard rebooted XBox via power button long press.
  4. Sudo hard rebooted XBox (by which I mean I unplugged it)
  5. Restarted the controller.
  6. Hard rebooted the controller by removing and replacing the battery.
  7. Re-syncing the controller.
  8. Using the controller wirelessly.
  9. Using the controller via microUSB.
  10. Using a different controller.
  11. Updating the firmware of the controller (no update available - last update over a month before the issue occurred).
  12. Using the Sennheiser headset on my PC (it works no problem).
  13. Using the Logitech headset on the XBox (it works no problem).
  14. Using the Logitech headset on just the headphone half of the 3.5mm combiner. (Audio came in fine; mic obviously did nothing)
  15. Using the Logitech headset on the microphone half of the 3.5mm combiner. (I think this worked fine, but did not confirm absolutely. However, see next point.)
  16. Using the Logitech headset plugged into the 3.5mm splitter, which was plugged into the 3.5mm combiner, which was plugged into the controller. Everything worked fine.

These troubleshooting steps seem to imply:

  1. Both headsets work fine.
  2. The controllers work fine.
  3. The splitter and combiner work fine.
  4. The XBox works fine.
  5. The Sennheiser + combiner don’t work with the XBox despite having worked for months previously, and roughly a month since the last update.

Finally, remember, this is all over 3.5mm, so it’s not like there’s a power issue with the headset, or a connection/software issue between the headset and controller.

(Yes, the Logitech headset has a powered/software component, but it’s turned off when I use it, and the USB-A bluetooth receiver couldn’t possibly connect to the controller anyway.)

(As to why I don’t just use the Logitech - I think there’s some crosstalk in the cable or possibly the controller 3.5mm port, because my friends almost always complain of echoes which go away if I turn the volume down. Also the Sennheiser is open-backed so my wife can talk to me; the Logitech is noise-cancelling.)

So, any idea what gives?
