iPhone, itunes, mac mini save and retrieve iPhone info

OK, this is about compatibility.

I have a 2009 mac mini running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) have a backed up copy of my old iPhone4 on it in iTunes 11.4 (18).

I just got a new iPhone 7, this is not compatible with the iTunes on my old mini.

Lost my old iPhone 4 but, like I said, I thought I was safe because of the backup I had just done. This old mini can only accommodate OS-X El Capitan.

Question: If I do the system upgrade will it be enough to restore my old iPhone 4 info onto my new iPhone 7?

Can this even work?

yes, it can. as long as the old info has been saved off. install el cap and then plug in your new phone.

I would leave your mac mini alone here.

Instead connect a second Mac system to your mini in Target Disk Mode to copy off your iTunes library to a newer MacOS system. The problem you face here is finding the correct iTunes which supports your iPhone 7 that will run on El Capitan. I would rather work off a second system with a copy Vs running the risk of loosing everything.

I don’t see why not. Especially due to the fact that many Apple/Mac technicians (including myself) now use El Capitan as the preferred operating system to install on problematic macs after resolving hard drive failures. It’s just a more recent OS and widely compatible even with older systems.

Regardless, your iPhone 4 backup isn’t going anywhere if you upgrade to El Capitan. It’s treated like a regular data file.

After the upgrade to El Cap, you should be able to restore from backup and your iPhone 7 will be all set. The only issues you might have is that any older apps from your iPhone 4 might not exist anymore or the developers no longer update them, meaning your iPhone 7 cannot support them.
