Every fan inside is spinning at high speed

Hello @mayer

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 (mid 2010) and I have months this problem with the fan’s spinning all the way to the max sounding really loud and annoying after a while.

I saw your screenshot from your fan speed’s and compared it with mine.

I checked inside my Mac Pro and every fan inside is spinning at high speed, but the fans that control my: Intake, Exhaust and PS are at 0? But they are spinning inside and with no issue.

The fan’s did have a little bit of dust but I already blew it away with an electric blower, and nothing changed after blowing away the dust.

Hope for some good tips!

Thanks in advance

It now looks like the CPU sensors have a problem which is why your fan's are maxing out. Check the CPU carrier contacts.

i restarted the system and checked for the connector and it looks al good.

The fans are now again at low speed like on the first picture at my initial post, but the fans are still going at full speed.

is it normal that there are 3 fans showing speed at 0 (intake, exhaust and ps)

You mentioned the mac pro diagnostics, how can i run the test?

i already tried with the original graphic card pressing 'D' at the startup but it stays a long time white screen and after it just boots up normally

thanks

Review this: How to Start up your Mac in Apple Diagnostics or Hardware Test Mode

The carrier unit like has a bad connection so as the system heats up it looses its connection.

- de

@danj

i already tried it pressing the D key but nothing happend, it just booted up to mac os after a couple minutes and denied to go to diagnostics. is this normal ?

i used a Usb keyboard.

Then you need to run from the grey OS installer disk that came with the system as outlined.

I felt you needed your own question on this. I’m posting my previous answer from the other question. I will need some time to research your issue further, will get back to you.

What upgrades or repairs have you done on this machine, what OS X are you running?

I’d run TG Pro to see if I could isolate the problem:

https://www.tunabellysoftware.com/tgpro/

compare mine that’s been running all day with yours

Please note yours is showing a hard drive sensor failure. I’d pull one drive at a time and restart to find the offending one.

Your CPU’s are also running much hotter than mine.

I’m running 2x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

The fan's problem spinning at max already existed even before i upgraded the cpu's and upgraded graphics card.

I run Mac Os Sierra 10.12.6

Upgraded original 5.1 Mac Pro from 2 quad core's to 2 six core's. I have posted a screenshot above with specs of my system. If u need more info let me know. Thanks

Well TG Pro is not showing your fans as running fast, let's ask @danj as he has more experience that I do using TGP.

- de

@mayer - TG Pro looks good in Aldo's post, your's looks like there is a problem. In any case TG Pro doesn't capture the other sensors SMC accesses. I'm wondering what Apple Mac Pro diagnostics shows.

The key is the PCI entry. Remove slowly the PCI boards sans the Video board. After removing each did you encounter a more stable system?

What do you mean exactly?

I only have the Graphics Card installed on the motherboard and other PCIE slots are empty.

- de

Then you'll need to move the card to another slot to see what happens.

- de

Alright i will test this later and let you know. Thanks!

- de

I tried like u told me,

changed the Graphics Card from one to the other PCI but nothing changed, The fans still running high. ( even tried with all empty slots and the same problem )

- de

Then the logic board has a bad solder joint as your system should not be jumping between working and not working.

The problem in the ( fan motor or his cable ) , the power line of lower speed doesn’t work , so it just run in higher speed to stop damaging your cpu.
