Adding Multitouch by a hardware replacement ?

So I thought of buying an topcase of a MacBook Pro 4,1 which has got a trackpad with multitouch for my MacBook Pro 3,1

Do you think it is possible, or will there be problems due to the flat ribbon cable or the connector or other hardware-related issues ?

Es esta una buena pregunta?

Hmm added an early 2008 multi-Touch trackpad upper assembly to my late 2007 MacBook Pro with no issues ... have been enjoying my multi-Touch ever since ...

Update ... Very glad I could help, I forgot to mention about the keyboard function keys being different, I had to change a a couple of my keytops to reflect the changes, well worth the extra effort!

Thanks Ben!

Okay all, this is the point in time for me to man up and say I'm wrong about the compatibility. It is true that the ribbon cable is different and angled differently, BUT there is sufficient play in the cable to connect without straining it. We were able to independently verify this compatibility (thanks Luke), and the only catch thus far is that if you don't update your keyboard, the function keys do different things than is printed on them (they will have the updated functionality of iTunes control). This is exactly why Answers is so good!!!! None of us has more information than all of us, and each of us is wrong sometimes. Erich, thanks for ultimately choosing to be civil about your stance; it proved fruitful.

AWESOME UPDATE!!!

Here's my original post:

Unfortunately, Apple moved the connector to the left on the logic board in the 4,1 revision.

HOWEVER due to Erich's information, we were able to verify that there is sufficient play in the cable to connect and give the A1226 MacBook Pros multiPod Touch functionality using an A1260 upper case!

Please take this opportunity to upvote Erich's Answer as correct, as I have also done!

Here is an alternative answer by the way that just occurred to me, if you still want multi-touch, you can buy a magic mouse, and be able to use multi touch with your laptop.

Interested in doing this for my A1226 (MacBook3,1).

Can anyone confirm that the triple-touch gestures of Lion are functional with this upgrade? (to the A1260 topdeck/touchpad)

Thanks!

David

Not sure if anyone will still be reading this but her I go anyway:

I'm contemplating the same procedure, just wondering what if any adjustments I have to make to the ribbon cable on the 1260 topcase to make it connect easily and without straining it. Anything outside of simply unplugging the old one, plugging in the new one, and putting the screws back in. Thanks

Did this a while ago, so fuzzy on the details. As I recall the parts fit was the same. There are a couple of ribbon cables and "press-on" flat connectors (for those cables) that you need to take care not to dislodge.

Just move slowly. I recall the guide being very good.

Two tips:

(1) Get *good* screwdrivers. It's so easy to strip many of those small screws.

(2) The mod is very much worth doing, IMHO.

HTH.

I put a A1260 top case on my A1226 - this far I had to swap out the F-keys cause they are different but with no problem since I had them from the old A1260 keyboard - fit really well. Only thing I have that is not working is the keyboard backlight... if anybody have any ideas I would love to hear what I could double check. Thnx
