Identify Blown Capacitor - What does it do? - MacBook Air Mid 2013

Dear all,

Does anyone know what the blown capacitor is? Please, see the attached photo.

Macbook Air 13 inch - Mid 2013. Model: A14466. Model Identifier: MacBookAir6,2

The battery appears also damaged (not charging but no visual signs of damage on it though) with an indication “Replace now” on the AHT and it will be replaced. However, the laptop is otherwise fully functional when connected to the charger. Perhaps this was caused by a current spike or humidity.

Lastly, is there a website with soldering instructions on how these specific capacitors can be safely replaced?

Thank you for your help.

Dear all,

What is the maximum heat tolerance of these capacitors (for the heat gun air temperature)?

In this respect, are microsoldering instructions available somewhere with how these capacitors can be safely replaced without damaging nearby components or even the replacement capacitors themselves?

Thank you again for your valuable help.

The component is C7140 a Tantalum capacitor:

  • 62UF - 0.023 OHM
  • 20%,
  • 11V
  • CASE-B2S-1

It regulates the batteries charging.

I would strongly recommend you also replace the battery as it maybe damaged. As to why it failed a voltage spike, a bad charger or a short of some-sort (loose screw).

Many thanks for your helpful answer!

However, it seems that a tantalum capacitor of this capacitance is not available from Mouser, Digi-Key etc. Any ideas?

Thank you again.

Those capacitors are generally Panasonic polymer caps and the issue with those is that they have really low voltage ratings so the engineers end up having to use them at more than 75% of their design spec. Over time, this can reduce their lifespans, especially if the laptop runs hotter than it should.

@refectio - Thank You, Minho

Is there any specific capacitor that you would recommend to purchase in order to replace it, preferably from Mouser or Digi-Key?

Thank you, again.

You're right, I couldn't find any either. These were probably custom designed for Apple's specification, which leads me to believe the value must have been important, otherwise you stick to jelly bean parts.

That said, the rating on this cap is 20% so you could probably safely pick a 60MF or 68MF cap with at least 11V rating and a low ESR (it's spec'd at 23 mOhms). Anything close to that should be fine.

Minho were you ever able to find a suitable replacement? I need the same value of capacitor.
