MacBook won’t turn on after in storage

Hi,

I have an 2009 MacBook that has sat in storage for the last 3-4 years after the hard drive died.

I pulled it out recently to find that it won’t turn on or charge.

Power light on the charger won’t light up even when plugged into the computer. I tried a buddy’s charger and didn’t work either. I’ve tried unplugging the battery and cleaning connections with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated thanks!

I found a few logic boards having developed oxide inside A1181, apparently even without any liquid damage signs.

Try taking out the ram sticks and check their condition and that of the ram slots. If those are clean, you’ll need to open up to check general conditions of the logic board, especially where the board takes power from the magsafe board.

However, in case you get it back running, you’ll have to access the board in any case to take care of thermal paste which, by now, is surely dry and unsuitable to dissipate heat properly.

Ram looks really clean, nothing really looks out of the ordinary, I was thinking that it could have been the MagSafe charge port that could’ve gone bad but I’m not sure

@b1602 Fact that you have an A1342 instead of an A1181 you referenced initially, changes the picture dramatically..boards are completely different and I've never seen any oxidation on those unless they suffered liquid damage. Try if it starts with battery disconnected in case battery got internally shortened with time and lack of use, it may happen.

Yeah I disconnected the battery. charger light still doesn’t come on

It almost seems like the charger isn’t seeing the computer al all.

@b1602 Not being a battery related issue there's only magsafe board and logic board left, unless it has been liquid damaged at some stage keyboard should not be in picture. You may try replacing just the magsafe board to start with and save some money or you may replace all, used boards for such Macs are coming pretty cheap nowadays. Attempting a repair would likely cost more than a replacement.

See if you can get a spontaneous reboot. Disconnect the battery from the logic board. Remove the mag-safe adapter. Press and hold the power on button for 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery and mag-safe and it should boot. Let us know if this fails or you get any reaction.

Tried it just now. Didn’t react at all. The power light on the charger isn’t lighting up at all.

OK, first I believe you have selected the wrong machine as the icon as these models were discontinued in 2008. I believe you have a unibody if it is a 2009. If so your 2009 unibody has a battery test button on the side. If it does, are you getting any indication of life when you press it? We can find your exact machine by plugging in the serial number from the back of the machine here:

Mine is the A1342, don’t see a test button anywhere on the sides. I’ve thrown everything at it and won’t react to anything. I hope it isn’t a major motherboard issue

A1181 got still manufactured into 2009 until the 2,26Ghz A1342 came to the market, I got one in stock myself, and they can be updated to El Capitan without patching, unlike 2008 models. Unfortunately in Core2duos you don't get any spontaneous reboot though, OP would have to shorten startup pads.

I changed the icon to the correct A1342 machine.
