MacOS won't install on new Internal SSD

Hello!

I have a Macbook Air 11” early 2014. I don’t have the original SSD. I bought new one:

Toshiba 128 GB Model #: 656-0021B

The Mac will start up fine on a USB Bootable Flash Drive loaded with Sierra. I’ve tried it with newer OS, but they gave me more problems. Sierra has been the best so far. It lets me do the following steps:

Power system on while pressing Command R (USB Bootable Flash Drive with Sierra plugged in)

  • Open Disk Utility
  • Format Internal SSD to Mac Extended
  • Reinstall New OS
  • Select Internal SSD

Everything starts like normal then right when it finishes it goes to the light grey screen. If the USB is still plugged in it boots, but is still working off the USB. If the USB isn’t there it just does the folder Icon with the question mark.

So my main problem is getting the OS onto the internal hard drive. I’m wondering if I could get an enclosure or a SATA cable to instal the OS externally on a working computer. The problem is I can’t find an enclosure or cable compatible with the SSD I got.

hi there, i just saw your post. I have had this exact issue with my client MacBook Air 2014. This Toshiba SSD is PCie and it is only compatible with 2015 models. 2014 models can not boot from it.

That's the correct stick. I do not see any mis-steps that you made. What was your source for it? Check to see if this enclosure will for for you, probably cheaper on eBay:

@danj Thanks, I was unaware that iFixit was selling them.

for that enclosure it says

"The OWC Envoy enclosure has been specifically designed for use only with the factory SSD found installed in the Mac models listed in compatibility. Do not attempt to install or use an OWC Aura SSD as external storage in an Envoy enclosure. This may damage the Aura drive, the Envoy enclosure, or both."

Is the SSD I have compatable? I bought the SSD from IFixit.

which SSD did you buy? Where did you put it?

@kfy - IFIXIT also sold recovered Apple SSD’s besides selling the OWC SSD’s. If you look at yours you have an Apple unit so your good!
