Lenovo Flex 4-1470 Will not Turn on.

Hello, my name is Ben.

This is my first IFixit post so please excuse me if I make any mistakes. As a project for a class I need to fix a laptop, this laptop being the Lenovo Flex 4-1470. I would really like to fix this as I currently don’t have laptop and if I am able to fix this my teacher said I can have it. Here is the Diagnoses, ''''

I left it plugged in for a very long time, and the charging light came on and supposedly the battery is charged.

I have tried discharging it, including opening it and disconnecting the battery from the motherboard and holding the power button for 60 seconds.

When I press the power button nothing happens, not even the power light comes on for a second like it does for a lot of other people. It just does nothing even though the battery is fully charged.

I have checked all the ribbon cables inside and none of them have come loose.

If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks!

Update (01/18/2019)

Hey, I am so sorry for the late response, it kind of lowered my spirits since I got a not so great grade, I will have to do credit recovery for that. But now I am back in the spirit and ready to fix this stubborn thing. Since the last post, I replaced the whole motherboard because all the troubleshooting lead to the motherboard being the a problem. When I replaced the motherboard, some things did happen. Now the power light turns on when I press the power button. But still none of the fans or the screen or anything turns on, so I guess this means the power button is working. I do not have a Ohmmeter, but I am assuming it works, since now the power light turns on when I press it? I am so confused. Could still really use some help with this.

Hi @autisticwiz ,

Don't know your laptop but if it won't start with the charger connected either then you may have to start at the beginning and check that the Power button is electrically OK.

Remove the charger (if connected) and disconnect the battery from the systemboard and use an Ohmmeter to check if there is continuity through the button when it is operated.

This will be difficult as you'll have to identify the wires that go from the systemboard to the button.

Once you have identified the button wiring connections and IF the button is faulty (i.e. no continuity when operated) then you may be able to start the laptop by placing a temporary short circuit (as long as a normal start button press), across the button connections on the systemboard and see if the laptop starts. Obviously the battery will have to be reconnected when you do this.

Here’s a link to the service manual which may be of some help to gain access to the various parts of the laptop. Although since you have already disconnected the battery you probably wont need it. ;-)

Be careful when using the Ohmmeter test probes on the systemboard as you don’t want to physically damage anything.

Also never test with an Ohmmeter when there is power connected to the systemboard. Even though the laptop is off as long as the battery is connected (and also the charger) there is power available at various points on the systemboard and you don’t want to cause any electrical problems by accidentally shorting out components or creating connections between components that shouldn’t be there.
