Frequent crashes: Dyld Error Message: Symbol not found: clock_gettim

I was running Cubase AI by Yamaha's Steinberg.

My system started crashing after overheating, Now after say 2-10 minutes my computer crashes, specially when I use applications with high processing power.

For the moment, I have MacsFanControl and set the 4000 RPM for now till I write this. I got the crash logs I will explain below.

Before I take this to Apple Service, or applying Thermal paste, I would like to understand what this is?

Here is a portion of my crash log. Can any one can help please? I do greatly appreciate it.

Thank you very much.

Update (12/18/2018)

Hi Folks, I am back with an update. I am using MFC.

I just cleaned the Fans and put a fresh Thermal Paste ( although I could tell it needed it badly). However, the issue did not get fixed! As soon as I ran Cubase Steinberg to do my CPU intensive job, MBP shut down on me! To start I have to wait for say 15 minutes, then it boots and the same story begins.

With respect to OSX being the issue, My MacBook Pro shuts down randomly when I am in my Bootcamp Windows! So I assume there reason is not my Yosemite Operating system.

One more thing, When I did open the MBP to replace the Thermal Past, I noticed that the inside does not look like

I bought this last year from Ebay and I suspect my MBP is an MacBook Pro 15” late 2011 and the person sold it to me on Ebay, had replace the logic board with Mid 2012! Is that possible?

Here is the look at inside of Late 2011 MBP ( like mine).

I have also the crash logs, if it is going to be help full.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

The best way to prove what logic board you have is to open the 'About This Mac' window. It will tell you what your system specs are as an example here's my 15" systems info:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)

- Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

- Memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

You could even take the S/N and paste it here: EveryMac - Lookup

Did you replace your SSD yet? I'm certain that will resolve this.

Hi Dan,

Are you suggesting me to get new SSD because it is faulty or it is full? I have about 90 GB free space on it!

I will surely buy a new one if there is an issue with my SSD!

- de

It's really both! At this point you have some blocks which are bad that have not been isolated out. You'll need to install driveDX To see whats happening with the SSD's health with the amount of wear the drive has gotten. In any case you'll likely need to scratch the drive down, reformatting it, installing a fresh copy of the OS's (MacOS & Windows) and your Apps. If you are still running apps from an external drive then I would strongly recommend you move them back to your main drive and if you find you are running tight I would make the jump to a new and bigger SSD to get over this hump.

- de

Hi there again,

I just moved all the applications files back to Macintosh HD, and did Scan Utility. I verified the Disks. I managed to repair thousands of permission errors, except 4 of them:

Permission differ on 'System.Library/COreService... plst

Permission differ on 'System.Library/COreService

Permission differ on 'System.Library/COreService

Permission differ on 'Application/Safari.app/... htm

I did also use driveDX and it should my SSD is health and 96% have life left!

However, it shows that I need to update firmware for SSD that may improve. I am going to run TimeMachine ( keep your fingers crossed for me) and update the firmware!

Thank you very much,

‘mysqld’ is MySQL dB error.

I’m suspecting your SSD is quite full and/or getting worn. The reason your system is overheating it’s fighting with its self trying to find free space and/or move data around to wear level your drive. As it’s working so hard to find space the process timed out.

So what to do?? First given the systems age it likely needs a good cleaning and the thermal past also needs to be cleaned and refreshed.

But to really fix your problem here you’ll need to replace the SSD with a bigger drive. Consider you need to leave about 1/4 of the drive unused so the OS & apps have free space for caching and paging.

Your system uses the older custom mSATA drives: BeetsTech -Apple SSD’s or OWC - SSD’s

Hi Thank you for the response.

My MacOS is Yosemite. I installed both Sierra and High Sierra on its VirtualBox as guest. While It was installing the Guest High Sierra inside VirualBox, I got the warning that "Startup Disk is full". I had only 300 MB free on my 373GB capacity. Then I moved many of my apps in the Application folder in another Drive ( non-SSD )! Maybe that caused the problem.

Now, I had 25GB free space on my SSD.

I have already checked inside and it is really clean however, I used dust spray to make it super clean! I will certainly invest in buying a new SSD and also applying the thermal past.

However, when I read this:

Dyld Error Message:

Symbol not found: _clock_gettime

Referenced from: /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld (which was built for Mac OS X 10.12)

Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

Since I have OS X 10.10, not sure how my mysql is for MacOSX 12! suspect that comes from Guest installation!

You do need to be careful when installing the same program under different user accounts. Often times the app is installed as a shared resource (all users accounts have access) but their user data is discreet to them alone.

When installing different versions of apps things can get messed up intermixing things (shared versions) which can also mess things up.

If you want to test something out I always use an external drive as a test bed. Basically, I setup a bootable external and then install the a new OS or App(s) in question on it.

I think you'll need to make a backup of your data and then scratch your drive and rebuild it with two user accounts.

The first being your Admin account and the second your real user account you want to use day to day.

Yes, I know... People love using a single user account which is not smart! Often times being the single admin account allows the cross pollination like you encountered.

If you had used a standard account it would have not polluted your shared apps which the admin user owns.

Actually, I have Windows 7 Bootcamp on this. I am going to run some intense applications see if it still crashes. Then, if it does, then

I am planning to do that. You are telling me to

1) backup my file

2) install a fresh OS

3) Create a new User (non-admin)

4) install all my app in user account?

So, I should not install anything in admin account? Aren't I correct?

Thank you very much, Dan.

- de

Install apps and maintain OS's under the Admin account (only thing you do under it). Use the User account for everyday use.

As you have a small SSD you want to store as much as you can thats not apps on an external drive.

Thank you I Will do that

Suggest you to use Mac fan controller application to control fan speed and check internal temperature if after installing this app you still face an issue there must be cleaning needed, any issue with logical board or due to some software errors Mac fan control App

Thank you for the prompt response. I am acutely using MFC and have set the Constant 4000RPM. It is working for two hours now. Interestingly the MFC disappears from my Application folder from time to time! and I need to reinstall it.

I am trying to pin down the software issue, after I moved many files to my other Drive!
