Why is Surface Pro 3 not receiving power?

My surface pro 3 has stopped receiving power. The light on the charging cable does not turn. To troubleshoot the problem I purchased a brand new power cord and used a different outlet to plug in. It still did not charge and the light in charging cable did not turn on either. I then went through the painstaking process of opening the surface and replacing the charging port from inside. Plugged it in and still has the same problem! Can someone please help me troubleshoot from here on. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance!

Albert,

Thank you but, the device does not receive power. I cannot even turn it on. It is a hardware issue not a software issue.

Thanks again

Hi Awrang,

Sorry, I had thought that you Surface has power,

Make sure of the following things:

The power connections must be secure.

Your clipboard and keyboard are attached to each other.

The charging port, power cord, and power connector are all functional.

Nothing else is plugged into its USB charging port.

The power supply must be uninterrupted.

If the LED light indicating power connector status is off or is flashing you will need to check the power source and replace it.

I do not agree if the surface not receiving power that is a hardware problem necesarily, there is some communication (hand-shaking)between the surface and the supply , that turns on or of the power, and this is again handled by the drivers in the OS, so it could be and probably is in 90% of these surface-pro cases ... since it can in many cases be solved by fiddeling with the battery/power-supply drivers in windows

You could try the following solutions one by one to resolve the issue and see if anything helps you.

1. Systematically shut down the device to charge.

  1. Ensure connection to power supply.
  2. Go to ‘Start’, followed by ‘Power’, and select ‘Shut down’.
  3.  Let the device charge for a minimum of 30 minutes before turning it on.

2. Install Windows Updates

Make sure the battery up to at least 40% and then install the latest updates for both, Windows and for Surface. This will help avoid a similar situation later. If the device doesn’t automatically restart after these updates, go to ‘Start’, followed by ‘Power’ to click ‘Restart’ manually. Keep repeating the process till you get the “Your device is up to date” message.

3. Run Power Troubleshooter

Run the Power Troubleshooter and see if it helps fix the problem.

4. Battery not detected

If you see a red ‘X’ on the battery icon with a power plug, go to Microsoft Device Service & Repair to solve the battery detection issue.

Hope these methods will help you.

Did you make sure the bridge/shim between the power port connector and the motherboard was in place?
