Power light on, chimes, no video

Mac Pro A1289, Power light goes on, it chimes, screen stays black. Apple Studio monitor connected through DVI to ADC adapter A1006 - suspicious, will be checked soon. All fans inside don’t work, seems like nothing inside the tower generates any heat. Can’t decide whether to abandon this one and buy a newer one (very limited funds, close to none), or try to check power supply - how do I find out if it is bad? What else to check? All set up worked with no problems for about 5 years. Any ideas?

Get back with us after you have tried a standard monitor. Then we can look at the diagnostic lights. The video card it the first thing that fails on the model then the power supply usually partially fails.

Checked with a working monitor - computer itself works fine. So, it's either DVI to ADC adapter A1006 (highest probablility) or monitor itself - or both. It makes sense to start with the Adapter - kit's only 30-40 bucks on ebay, then the monitor either will work or not. Looks like a plan. Will post the results.

I know the PSUs in that model are proprietary and I am not 100% sure about how the cabling is set up, but you might have luck with one of these. It is handy to have around if you have a friend or relative who has a desktop PC as well. Any time I get a new PSU I ALWAYS hook it up and check it. I have had a couple of bad PSUs out of the box and it is good to know before you put it inside and potentially damage something else.

If that doesn’t have the right ports for your PSU then a regular old multimeter is the way to go. Power off the machine, unhook all the power cables then power the PSU back on and check each pin. I you should be able to find a voltage reference pinout here.

Good luck man!

I'm still in the same situation - didn't really have time to get deep into the machine. Some changes after I've unplugged the power and connected it about 1/2 hour later. Now - fans work, USB works, even when I hit a button on the keyboard, the Superdrive tray comes out. But - no video, the screen is black.

Still haven't received DVI to ADC adapter A1006 - it goes in between the video connector on the videocard in the computer and the Studio monitor. The only way to check this adapter without getting a new one is to hook another monitor to the videocard. Hope to get one tomorrow.

I would bet my first born that your video card is fine and it is a power supply failure. Good luck.

The verdict (at least the first part of it) is in - OS is OK, Video card is OK, it's almost definitely DVI to ADC adapter, so I'm receiving one on Monday.
