Will my Samsung TV work in Europe?

Hi,

I’m moving to Europe and I was wondering if my fairly new TV set would work there (https://www.samsung.com/us/televisions-h...). Technical specs says it’s 110-120v & 50/60 hz so I’m guessing it would not work?

If it does would it need a voltage transformer?

Thanks

Hi Augustine, thanks for the quick reply.

As I understand from your reply, as long as the power board is labelled as 110-220v &50-60hz as input, a simple power cable change will do the trick, eventhough the external label on the TV says its 110v?

If so, as you’ve said I can either check the power board on the tv, or find out which power board this model uses and the power boards specs,

Thanks a bunch.

If anyone likes to add more info, please feel free to do so.

Hi sffixers

If you are moving to europe which is using 230V,

There are several options.

  1. The safest is to use a step down transformer, from 230V to 110V
  2. If you are comfortable to open up the tv, check on the power board (Take note on the model no too), some will have a detailed information on it, hopefully can support universal, e.g. from 110V to 230V as input. (Hopefiully someone has more information on it.)

Hi,

It most probably will not work correctly even if the power supply problem was overcome.

If the TV was designed for and sold in the North American, South American and parts of the Asian markets it would be set up to receive and work with NTSC TV signals whereas most of Europe operates on the PAL TV system and to a lesser extent the SECAM system.

Here’s a link that may be of some help.

What about Streaming Services? Like Google Chromecast for Netflix and Viaplay etc etc. Same issues? I have three brand new Samsung Curved screens and I am moving to Norway

tjbhaus should be okay. PAL and NTSC are really only for the analog bands. This still effects DVD, Video etc. but not to much on the streaming or regular digital broadcast service. Your TV's most like will have a hardware scaler which adapts the images sent to the proper pixels. allowing them to adapt the pictures sent to the pixels they actually have.

worst case scenario would be that you need a NTSC to PAL converter which is around $100, cheaper than buying a new TV in Norway

@tjbhaus,

Here's a link that expands on what @oldturkey03 mentions.
