Do I need to perform a teardown to replace keyboard?

I have been asked to replace the keyboard on a Yoga 730, but the 720 is all I can find that has any guides available. I would guess it’s close to the same layout as the 720, but wanted to confirm that it’s even possible to replace the keyboard on this unit. Seems like it would require an almost complete teardown to do it, as I need to access from the bottom and work through everything to get to the top side. Any advice is appreciated. @captainsnowball Looks like you have experience with this model of Yoga, any recommendations?

The problem with many of these modern laptops is the keyboard is spot welded in - unless you have the tooling to replace the plastic standoffs you need to damage, you need the palmrest assembly with the factory calibrated trackpad, if that’s not sold individually. Judging from what I see in @captainsnowball’s guides on the system, this looks like the case.

This is common because it allows the OEM to bring the cost down and make the laptop thinner. Laptops with serviceable keyboards tend to be fairly thick in many cases because you have to do it in order to make a serviceable keyboard work.

Hi Nick, thanks for the quick response. It seems like this model has the keyboard embedded in the upper case; so if I were to attain a replacement for the upper case I would think I could avoid damaging the plastic standoffs. Or am I misunderstanding where the damage might occur? Thanks again!

You can't... You need the palmrest to replace it.

I think I mean the samething; the palm rest and upper case are one unit, which also contains the keyboard. Either way though, it doesn't look like there are many replacement parts out there for the 730, and the ones that I have found are just absurdly priced. Oh well. Thanks for the help!

I'd buy a parts unit if you need it and cannot find it reasonably priced.
