The fridge is cooling just fine but the freezer is not working.

I have a 2013 Whirlpool French doors/bottom freezer (WRF990SLAM00). The fridge is cooling just fine but the freezer is not working. I had an experienced refrigeration guy come out (~40 yrs in the business) and he showed me ice build up in the upper right corner (behind the freezer compartment cover in the back, on the copper coils). He said that it was a sign that there is a slow freon leak in the system. A 5 year old fridge (bought it this month 5 years ago) and it has a freon leak?!? I called Whirlpool to complain. They said that I needed to hire a Whirlpool-certified tech to double check the diagnosis and that they would work with me to find a solution — they will be here on Saturday. My repairman said that any patch job is only temporary and that I should push to get a new unit.

Hi,

I've moved your "answer" to a new question on ifixit as it was posted on an old thread. This way hopefully it will get more attention.

Hi,

It is hard to believe that the manufacturer only gives a 1 year warranty -p.37 on the appliance, especially the sealed system.

Most manufacturers do only give 12 months on the refrigerator/freezer parts but give at least 5 year and sometimes 10 years on the sealed system in a refrigerator.

If the problem with your appliance is determined to be with the sealed system then depending on your location (if outside USA or Canada) check the warranty in the user manual that came with the refrigerator or online for your location to see if it is different and then also contact the relevant federal or state consumer affairs dept. regarding length of warranty for major appliances.

Do this so that you are aware of your consumer rights regarding warranty repairs for major appliances.

It may be that the 12 months is all that you are legally entitled to. If so then you may have to weigh up whether to pay for it to get it repaired (hopefully come to some arrangement with the manufacturer - point out your disappointment at their “quality product” failing so soon) or purchase a new refrigerator with the features that you want but that has a much better manufacturer's warranty
