Are the exterior buttons (volume, mute switch and side button) from the iPhone 7 Plus the same size and shape as the iPhone 8 Plus? Thanks.

I see no problem except your device rejecting the foreign buttons. They are both the same size and seem to connect the same way. They are swappable, just watch out for your device trying to reject the new organs.

Thanks Pusheen. In what circumstances would the phone "reject" the buttons?
For anyone curious, I just happen to have a black iPhone 7 plus and a gold iPhone 8 plus and thought swapping the volume/mute/sim tray/side buttons (gold on black, black on gold) would look nice.
Akin to the home button, the phone is paired with a set of buttons at the factory that may be stuck with it. Swapping it may be noticable to the phone, like the home button.

From comparing them, they look the same size, however, the problem may be the ribbon cable connectivity.

Checking the photos I see the ribbons with the same shape and I counted the pins, they seem to be swappable.
