Replacement LCD not working, old LCD no longer working either

Ok, so first off, this isn’t my first replacement screen. I’ve done a few in my time. I have kids and they can’t seem to keep their phones protected.

Anyway, I set out last night to replace my daughters iPhone 7 plus screen. I had to swap the home buttom, camera, sensor, etc as the replacement was just the LCD and glass.

After connecting the new LCD, I did my usual power on the phone to check the display and make sure it works. Nothing. I call the phone. It vibrates so I know it is working. I press the power button to stop the vibration and it doesn’t seem to work. At this point I think defective screen, so I swap back to the original and it no longer works.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a sensor I’ve missed? Something to keep the display from turning on? I’ve done the screen before and not had issues, but I’ve also not had to swap the camera and prox sensors. Help!

With iPhone screen replacements when transferring the top components and the home button it can definitely be a bit tricky. Those flex cables are very fragile and can cause different issues when they are damaged. Since you are not getting any display output but the phone is still turning on, there a few things that could be causing the issue.

One good thing to check is going to be the display cable connections on the phone itself. Sometimes a pin could have gotten bent when trying to connect the display cable, and that would definitely be causing the issue you are having, i would try to check those connections on the phone with a usb microscope or you could try using the “magnifer” feature of another iPhones camera. (you can find this under the settings by searching for magnifier, its not the best solution but it could be enough to help).

Another option that could be wrong in my experience with working on iPhones, is that when the home button is not detected either due to a damaged cable or, due to not being connected properly, sometimes the display will not boot up or it will boot and just appear to be in a boot loop stuck on the apple logo. Hopefully the home button is not damaged as this can’t be replaced on the iPhone 7 Plus, because it is paired to the logic board so you wouldn’t get any functionality out of a replacement home button.

If I were to guess at which is the culprit it would be the display connections on the phone, but I am not entirely sure without being able to look at anything, hopefully this answer helps at least in some way.

I have checked and double checked all the connections. I've also inspected the cable connectors for damage. Unfortunately I have not picked up a USB microscope yet. I recently started designing circuit boards and put one of my need to order list.

if you didnt disconnect the battery you could of blown the backlight filter. try to shine a flashlight into the screen and see if u can see an image

I got in a rush and forgot to disconnect the battery until after I popped off the two cables for the display. I don't see an image when shining a light in to the screen. Is it possible to blow the display and not the backlight? I say that while crossing my fingers.

its fine to remove the screen with the battery connected as long as it was disconnected when u were hooking up the new one you should be good there

Actually you can still blow the backlight circuit regardless of whether you're removing or installing a display. And if you're especially clumsy with a conductive/metal tool, you can blow the circuit with no display attached at all. Bottom line, don't do anything with the battery still connected.
