Why wont my cartridge tray open?

i have two canon printers, selphy cp760. and cp740 and have the same problem, while printing they printed the first color and then informed me that the cartridge run out of ink, change cartridge by pushing the release lever which i did, only the right hand side released but the left side remained tight. please can you help.
