Keyboard has stopped working

Hello all,

i had recently upgraded my a1342 which meant taking it apart completely. Now once putting it back together, everything works just fine, except my keyboard. I’ve tried putting the cable back in, resetting my SMC (which doesn’t work since my keys don’t work) and it’s got the most recent update of OS. I’m not sure what other fix to try. Please and thank you!

here is my ribbon in the slot. The lever is still working and it seems to be in as far as it can go. Is it possible the ribbon is misconnected on the keyboard side?

What do you mean you took it apart completely? What did you upgrade? the RAM? the Drive? Did you take the logic board out?

- de

I upgrade the Ram, upgrade the Hard drive and dusted off the logic board, so yes I removed it. All cables are plugged in and I have the keyboard cable plugged in as far as it can go without breaking it.

Does it power up from the keyboard?

- de

It powers up from the button in the top right, yes. But not a single key works. So I'm using an external bluetooth keyboard, but trying to see if its just software issue or something that can be quickly fixed

Sounds like you didn’t fully reseat the keyboard ribbon or the latch is broken. As you can see in this image the latch is in the down position and the ribbon is fully seated

Carefully lift the latch up

Here we can see the latch is up as the cable is being pulled out

I use a strip of electricians tape to create a pull tab to make re-seating easier. placing the tape on the ribbon with the tab facing the contacts back enough so as not impede inserting. Make sure the latch is in the correct position before inserting and then carefully fold the latch down to hold the ribbon cable while you hold the cable fully inserted. It needs to look like the first image here.

Before you put the ribbon back in do inspect it for damage did you tear it or damage the contact surfaces?

I checked the cable again and it seemed to be inserted as far as it can, picture posted above, and still seems to be malfunctioning. No damages seen on the cable.

The damage maybe underneath the logic board. You'll need to pull the logic board and inspect the rest of the cable. Clearly if this was working before your actions cause it to fail so you'll need to review the steps you took. Did you use a vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust or did you use a can of can'ed air? Did you use an anti-static work surface and properly grounded the ESD mat and your self? This is important within dry climates.
