Replace HDD with SSD in MacBook Pro - late 2008 model?

Hello,

1. Is it possible to exchange the 320gb-HDD in my late 2008 MacBookPro 15" (MB471D/A) with a 256gb SSD (i would prefer Crucial RealSSD C300)?

2. Can I use this SSD with SATA2 or even SATA3?

3. Do I need some special screw-drivers to open the MacBook Pro?

4. If possible, will the MacBook really become faster?

Thanks in advance for helping me!

Best regards

HenryS

Yes you can exchange the hard drive. Will need to identify which machine you have to know if you need special tools. Please list the last three figures of your serial number. It will be SATA 1.5. Of course it will be faster.

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15" (Unibody) Specs

Identifiers: Late 2008/Unibody - MB471LL/A - MacBookPro5,1 - A1286 - 2255

Here's how to change it, you do not need special tools: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 and Early 2009 Optical Drive Replacement

Thanks Mayer. Only one question more: Is this the change of the original HDD or the DVD? Sorry, I'm not really sure...

- de

The first link is for replacing the optical drive, in case you want to use an adapter. Here's the plain hard drive replacement: Reemplazo del disco duro de MacBook Pro de 15 pulgadas Unibody de fines de 2008 y principios de 2009

Yes you can even use up to the latest SATA 6 gb/s SSDs but since your Macbook Pro supports only up to SATA 3 gb/s, the SSD will not be used at its full potential. However it will still be a vast upgrade in responsiveness of your machine.

I'm using the SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series 256GB SATA III for my Macbook Pro late 2008, and the result is amazing.

What jind of OS X are you using?

I was bought Kingston UV300 for my Aluminium 2008 macbook. But i can't install mac os El Capitan. BUT! If i use it like outside disk by USB, it is works. Have anybody such problem?

- de

Yes, your ATA cable need to be replaced, i only don't know which one :-)

My 2008 15" doesn't work either with a new SSD in the drive. It does work via USB though. I replaced the drive SATA cable and it still doesn't boot with the SSD. The original hard drive works fine. Any idea if there's different updated SATA I need to get instead of the original one? The late 2008-early 2009 use a unique cable that changed in mid-2009.

I had the same problem. Installed a 240GB SanDisk into my 2008 15" and the laptop would not boot. On power up the CD drive makes noise but I don't even get the power up chime. Went back to the old hard drive and everything worked fine. Any ideas?

@Ryan:

- are you sure about the SATA-2 support for the late 2008 unibody modells?

- will this also be true for the late 2008 unibody macbook? (it wasn't called 'pro' yet at that time)

reason for my question:

I upgraded my MacBook Unibody Late 2008 2.4GHz to a OCZ Vertex 3 (240GB) SSD ... and though in the system profiler the SATA link speed is stated 3 Gigabit (=SATA-2) it also 'only' states 'negotiated speed' as 1.5 Gigabit (=SATA-1).

am I doing something wrong or is it just that I waited a lot of money buying a SATA-3 SSD to put in a SATA-2 Macbook but which is not able to run at SATA-2 but only at SATA-1 'speed'(=slow motion) with this SSD???

Thx,

SpaceDoc

Hello!

1) Which SSD approx. 250GB would be recommendable?; (I like speed)

2) Is there a Ifixit manual that I could use?

I specifically recommend against using OCZ Vertex3 in that model macbook pro. I believe it doesn't get along with the Nvidia chipset. I installed a drive and experienced such instability I had to pull it. I'm now running with a WinMate SSD drive in my express card slot which, on its own, is an amazing improvement.

I'm on the hunt for drives known to work with the Late 2008 MBP.

I tried both full ssd and hybrid drives in my unibody late 2008 and neither worked in the drive bay; i bought an adapter and put in the optical bay and it works perfectly.

I have installed a Kingston 120GB V+200 SSD into my late 2008 model and it works just fine (not at the sata3 speed but much faster than the stock hard drive).

I also bought a optical drive bracket for the old drive which I now use as a storage area.

Whilst I had the laptop open I also cleaned out the fans as it was getting hot during normal use.

All of this has made my mac like new again! Well worth the effort!!

the issue with late 2008 is the MCP79 AHCI nvidia chip and some Sandforce firmwares. If you choose one with indilinx you should be fine. Just wanted to put something specific in this thread.

I have not specified which SandForce FW as I am not sure if it is all or just some of the 6Gbones.

The sata 3Gb will work fine
