The android keyboard stops functioning whenever I press certain keys

It just happened recently. My Oppo Neo 7 phone’s keyboard would suddenly stop from functioning every time I press the keys found at the bottom, like the space bar or comma or the period. When that happens, I can’t type anything, the last key that I tried to press before the lag gets stuck, and whenever I press the Home button the keyboard is still there. Also the screen will still function, but the keyboard is still visible, and cannot be touched. I searched for possible solutions like downloading a new keyboard theme (which was told to be useful, in one website), or setting the language to English (US), but none worked. I also tried restarting my phone over and over again, but still nothing.

I may have an idea, which is it might be because of low storage. I can’t confirm it because I found nothing on the internet that it might be right. It never happened before, even when everytime I check the internal storage, the remaining space left is 500MB or less, but now it’s at 800MB and it’s definitely happening. I can’t just erase all my files without preparing and without reason.

Any confirmation, ideas, or solutions please?

Hi @darv_peps ,

Try starting the phone in safe mode and check if the problem is still there.

If is works OK in safe mode, then a downloaded app is the cause of the problem. The trick is to find out which one is the culprit.

This is the only time I heard of Safe Mode, so thank you for your answer, @jayeff . But one small catch before I can do that. I don't think I understand pretty well the first 2 steps. What I did is I held the power button (as of Step 1), then held the Power Off (or Shut Down) option (as of Step 2), but nothing showed up. I kept holding to it for like 10 minutes, and yet I still don't know what to expect.

Solución Elegida

Hi @darv_peps ,

Sounds like you did it right.

You should only have to tap the Power button so that the shutdown menu appears then press and hold the Shut down option for it give a safe mode start option to select.

Looking online, I've just noticed that other people are also stating that there is no 'safe mode" option in their Oppo Neo 7.

Have you got the latest firmware in your phone? Try updating it and then check.

If it is still not available can only suggest that you either contact Oppo about not having a safe mode option (this has been a standard Android option on most phones, for years) or alternatively backup your phone using the phone's backup feature, then restore (reset) the phone using the phone’s factory restore feature, test if it works OK and if it does then restore the phone back to what it was with the backup that you made earlier, using the phone’s restore feature and then check that it still works OK and that the reset has resolved the problem.

Be aware that a factory restore (also known as a hard reset or master reset) will erase all your data and downloaded apps. It will restore the phone to its’ factory default condition (or last system update condition). That is why it is important to backup the phone first before performing a factory restore.

With the time being earlier, I kept searching for "How to activate safe mode in Oppo Neo 7 phones" on Youtube and it showed up at least a few that I'm sure are Oppo Neo 7 phones. But I kept trying and nothing happened.

About the hard reset, I kinda accidentally stumbled across one video, and I tried it. I'm not sure if what I did was "hard reset", but one thing for sure I pressed the reboot option. The phone restarted, and fortunately all of my data are still here.

I am considering the system update, too. That's why I'm preparing for a backup and saving all my progress to a cloud, and deleting unused data.

I was also thinking of the factory reset as a last resort, but I was unaware that it would erase all my data! Thank you so much for stating that. All my hard work could have been destroyed.
