Why can't a Verizon front panel replace an AT&T one?

So my friend recently dropped his Verizon model into a glass of water and, naturally, it stopped functioning correctly. His screen, however, still works fine. Before this happened I had dropped my AT&T model onto asphalt and the front panel cracked like a very fragile egg.

My first instinct was to make sure iFixIt had a replacement part for my phone (not going to fix my friend's phone for him), but I noticed there is two different replacement panels depending on the carrier and the listings mention they're only for the applicable models... Is there a legitimate incompatibility between them or is that just something thrown in to cover any potential problems between parts? I'd rather not pay $150 for a new panel when I could just use my friend's.

tl;dr - Can a Verizon front panel be used to replace an AT&T front panel? If no, why not?

I believe that the frame that goes around the edge of the glass is different. Because the prongs of the frame are spaced apart differently. The prongs attach to the screws in the phone. This is the same problem with the back plate too, the frames are different. The two iP4 are just different. Most evident in the lack or presence of a SIM tray and the slightly different location of the Mute and Volume buttons. They even need different protection cases or ones designed to fit both.

And you're positive of the differences? It's not that I don't believe you (quite the contrary, actually), it's just that I don't understand why Apple would make two different replacement parts that should be the same. It seems like they could have put the screw holes in the same place regardless of how buttons were repositioned.

It is not really the same phone:-) so there are not a whole lot of parts that are interchangeable. Yes, the mid-frame is different, thus the panel is not going to fit.

I know I am writing this 5 years later, but for all future reference,

You are wrong about the backplate. I got an Verizon model iPhone 4 (model A1349) from a friend that didn't take very good care of it. The camera lens was extremely scratched up and all the pictures taken with it had a nasty area of blur at the top 1/8th of the exposure. I recently bought a trash iPhone 4s (model A1387) for cheap off ebay and used the backplate perfectly fine on my Verizon iPhone 4.

Worth noting, is that as the frame is the only part of the display assembly that is different, it is possible to move glass from one phone into the frame of the other phone.

This is, however, a much more difficult job, involving removing the broken glass from the frame that it's glued into, without damaging the lcd. If you can get all the glass out of the frame, and get your friend's glass out of the frame without breaking it, you should be able to glue (I've heard E6000 recommended as the adhesive of choice for this) the good screen into the correct frame.

You should have a heat gun for this, and take it very slowly. It's a difficult, tedious, and dangerous process, but it can be done.

Edit: Also, be aware that if there is water damage to your friend's phone, the digitizer may be compromised. So there is always the chance that you do everything right, and it still won't work. Good luck!

Run your thumbnail around the gap between the old glass and its bezel. Replace the frame with the one on the old lcd and attach to frame with adhesive. Install the lcd on the AT&T phone. The connectors and cables are identical and will work on all 4 series phones including the 4s as long as you use the correct bezel.

Worked for me. Easier than removing glass from a good LCD. Thanks.
