After screen and dock replacement battery dies

Hello everyone,

I have an Iphone 7 which had a broken screen and the loudspeaker didn’t work. Easy repair because I fix Iphone’s for a quite long time. So I ordered every part I needed. After replacing the screen and loudspeaker the Iphone worked fine except the loudspeaker was still defective so I ordered a new dock because that could be the reason the loudspeaker wasn’t working.

After replacing the dock and putting the Iphone back, it got stuck on the Apple logo for 2 minutes and then suddenly it shut down. The red battery showed up with the charging cable, so I thought the battery was probably just empty. After charging the Iphone for around 10 minutes the screen suddenly became black and the Iphone didn’t respond on anything. Hmmm dead battery? I ordered an new battery and replaced the old one.

And after replacing the battery it started back up again but still stuck on the apple logo and then exactly the same thing happenend. The red battery showed up, I charged te Iphone but this time it turned black in 2 minutes I guess. So the battery dies completely if I put the Iphone on the charger.

What did I do wrong and is this possible to fix?

*cry*

I’m not convinced this is a battery issue. If you have access to a multimeter, then measure the voltage of the battery directly. If you have anything above 3.5V, it should boot fine.

The iPhone 7 series of devices have proven to be very unreliable, suffering from flex-based issues similar to the iPhone 6 Plus (Touch Disease). On the iPhone 7, the fault line runs along the top of the SIM card reader and affects the Baseband CPU and Audio IC. Any short copper traces running perpendicular to the fault line while connecting to micro-BGA pads, is subject to failing.

On the Audio IC, this particularly affects the C12 pad/trace although there are 4 pads/traces along the fault line. Of those four, the C12 pad (I2S_AP_TO_CODEC_MCLK) is the most critical as it is a communication protocol line between the CPU and the Audio IC.

Here are the typical symptoms, as collated by the repair community:

  1. Voice Memos app / Loudspeaker on call - greyed out
  2. Siri doesn’t hear you / Caller can’t hear you
  3. Most other Audio related issues that aren’t solved by modular replacements
  4. Long boot times (3-5 minutes)
  5. iTunes detects the phone but stuck on the Apple Logo

It’s quite common for this problem to crop up following another repair, such a screen repair.

But has the Audio IC also influence on the phone charging or even booting up! When the Iphone was stuck on the apple logo I couldn´t get it in DFU of recovery mode and neither was Itunes detecting my Iphone. Also when it turned of it wouldn´t charge until I pulled out and set the flex cable of the dock back and after that I got the red battery without charging cable so it was charging and after 2 minutes it turned totally black and now it isn´t responding on anything

To me this sounds like a grounding issue not allowing the battery to charge completely. I would recheck and make sure I put back all the brackets and ground straps in their proper place and orientation.

I´ll try to recheck everything again and screw back the brackets and put the phone charging to see if this has results!
