no VPN, good public connectivity - yes VPN, no public connectivity

When I am working from home, and tunnel into my company's system via VPN, I can work on my company's network but cannot get to external sites such as Google or Yahoo, or Microsft Live Meeting.

When I am in the office, connected to my company's WLAN, I have no problem working both on my company's network AND external sites such as Google, Yahoo, or Miccrosoft Live Meeting.

Doesn't sound to me like it's my home service provider because I can get to any site as long as I'm not tunneled into my company's system.

I'm stumped!

It sounds like you are using a 3rd party wireless network manager, like HP's and when setting up your VPN you or a company tech created and saved a profile for your home. In that profile you have limited connectivity, only the VPN. At your office you have another profile you connect with that is not limited. All you need to do is modify your home profile to allow actual internet connectivity or create another one that is unrestricted.

Sounds like the VPN is configured to filter out those type of websites (or only allow company approved sites) but the office WLAN is not. Probably because your boss wants to hang out on YouTube after lunch :/

I can tell that you are exhibiting your obvious good sense of humor, but my company does not filter what we can look at. Nevertheless, your answer has a thread of accuracy to it. It has to be something associated with the VPN that affects consumer service providers but not our internal WLAN.

How does one diagnose the VPN? (neophyte here).

Talk to the Network Admin (don't I sound like a Windows text box?) at the office to see if the VPN is setup to only access certain URL's.

Wow...why do you guys think the company offers him only a tunneled connection ? If he could open a second ie window and browse any site in the internet, woud'nt he open the companys network for the whole internet (like a bridge, or are gateway)

That why companys offering tunnels...

Good luck..
