iPhone 7+ Multiple Issues after Screen Replacement

Hi all,

I took it on myself to replace the screen on my iPhone 7+. After installing the new screen, I noticed the following features no longer worked : front camera , ear speaker, vibrate on silent/ring, volume controls, phone speaker, and home button no longer clicked ( however, fingerprint functionality still worked).

After multiple forums and post, I was able to pin point that the flex cable could be the culprit. I went through 2 flex cables, and on the 3rd cable I forgot to pin the flex cable to the board and noticed all above issues were resolved ( besides front camera...obviously. I then pinned the flex cable to the board, however, all issues returned.

I decided to install the previous flex cables and tested pinned vs non-pinned to board, issues still remained. However, after reinstalling the 3rd flex cable, unpinned to board, issues were resolved.

Would anyone know what the issue could be? For what its worth, I did not install the heat shield around speaker/front camera and the cable pins just as I did not want to continuously screw and unscrew. Not sure if this could be the reason?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

I see four different problem areas here:

  1. The Front Camera, Ear speaker - This could be caused by a damaged FCAM flex or connectors
  2. The Volume buttons, mute button - These are on a separate flex and you perhaps forgot to connect it back to the board or somehow damaged it.
  3. Taptic, Loudpseaker - These are based off of the Lightning Connector flex. Same observations, you may have damaged the flex (not likely, it's thick) or the connector.
  4. No Home Button "click". That is caused by damage to the Home Button flex, usually when removing it. There is a small IC on the flex and when the flex is removed incorrectly, it can cause the soldered connection under the IC to crack. This can be repaired but it is a soldering repair.

I got a little lost following your troubleshooting steps (sorry!). Depending on how many of these issues are real failures versus just bad parts/incorrect installation, you may reach a point where cost of repair equals OOW replacement with Apple.

What I am noticing is the following, when I connect the flex cable to the board, I am getting the above mentioned issues, however, when I uconnect the flex cable from the board all the issues are resolved.

The flex cable is new, and if I damaged it, how would the Ear Speaker still work? I see.the Ear Speaker has 4 pins which touch the flex cable so I'm assuming the flex cable is working?

the flex cable is damaged or has microscopic cracks on the traces some traces are needed to function the ear speakers but the rest may be shorted to ground by cracks and thus causing the other issues.
