Fridge stopped running, I turned something now works-why?!

Our 10 year old whirlpool fridge quit running. Stuff started melting, we emptied it. I was cleaning it thinking we’re getting a new one... turned the cooling dial down because that’s what I do when I defrost and clean my little fridge I have in my classroom before the summer starts (I’m a teacher). When I turned the dial to be less cool, the motor (or something?) kicked on!!! A little while later I turned the dial to make it even colder and it’s working. What could have been wrong? Do you think it will break again? Is it not reliable anymore?

It’s going to break again, but it could be 10 years from now. I would go in and clean the coils and go over the screws and tighten everything up. Examine the wiring for loose connections and cold solder joints. Have a plan for what to do if it fails.

Thank you! My husband tinkered around the back (made sure connectors were connected and tightened screws, etc.) a day or two before and nothing happened but when I turned that dial, something happened. So that’s the weird part. We ordered a new one before it came back to life but I guess we can cancel the order.... ? It will save us money now but who knows how long ‘til the old one dies again....

When I felt my fridge was becoming unreliable, I converted it into a beverage box. Put in a a couple of beer taps and used 5 gallons coke cans full of home-brew. I had the CO2 on the outside. It lasted another 24 years.
