Why is the volume level decreasing over time.

As my iPod gets older I have noticed I need to increase the volume in order to be able to hear music through speakers and headphones. The sound quality is also increasingly less crisp. (I tested it against my iPhone 5s to make sure it wasn’t my hearing).

Is there anything I can do - I hate the thought of it becoming e-waste!
