Water Pump Belt

If the washer won't drain the pump belt might have broken or might have worn out. Check the belt and replace if it shows signs of excessive wear.

Drain Pump

If the washer won't drain water the drain pump might be defective. It's also common for a small sock or other article of clothing to get caught in the drain pump or in the drain hose. Check both for an obstruction before replacing the pump.

Other Causes and Conditions

Clogged Pump or Hose

If the washer won't drain there might be a clogged pump or hose. It's common for small socks or other small clothing items to get into the water drain system and clog the hose leading to the pump or the pump itself. Remove the hoses from the pump in order to remove the article of clothing. Keep in mind that any water in the washer will pour out of the hoses when removed.

Washers that specify “high efficiency” laundry detergent are very sensitive to suds build-up. These washers have a suds sensor that will stop the spin cycle before it reaches full speed if the suds build up is excessive. The result: wet clothes when the washer stops. Using the wrong detergent has a cumulative effect.

Unfortunately, too, the washer does not report any identifiable error to help you diagnose the problem.

If the washer has a “Clean washer” cycle, run the unit through that a couple of times with bleach. If soap has accumulated in the machine, this may help get the washer back to near normal operation. Make sure all of your laundry detergent bears the HE label here on out. And while the cleaning may get you back into a range where the suds sensor doesn’t trigger, you still have a soap build-up problem that may take a long time to clear.

Run the clean cycle at least once per week. (Manufacturer recommends once per month, but you probably didn’t do that, now, did you?). Select “extra rinse” for each normal load, too.
