MacBook Pro dropped from table height, doesnt turn on

Hi everybody!

My MacBook Pro Unibody 2008 dropped on the floor from table height a couple of years ago. It didnt really bother me back in the day because I already replaced it with a 13-Inch MacBook Pro of a newer generation.

Anyway:

Today I got curious if I could fix it and give it away as a gift to someone who cant afford a notebook., because it is still more than enough for browsing the web and so on.

Symptoms:

- No damage visable, no dents or scratches

-doesnt turn on

-MacSafe Adapter doesnt have a green/orange light at all

(I tried different Adapters on different Power Sockets, they all work on my other Mac)

-Doesnt turn on without battery

Is there anyway to locate the damage? I suspect the LogicBoard but I dont want to replace just yet.

Thank you a lot!

Best regards

Thomas

Update (06/06/2018)

Thank you.

I cleaned the dust out of the system.

I couldnt find any visable damage on the DC-In Board. Is there a way I can measure the voltage in the system in order to check if the DC-In Board or the LogicBoard needs to be replaced?

Did you try powering up the system by placing the MagSafe cable directly on the contacts without fitting it through the housings connector hole?

Often the plastic deforms so the contacts are not mating. This is the simplest test you need to do first.

You’ll need to open the system up to at least clean the dust build up using a soft paint brush and a can of can’ed air.

Follow this IFIXIT guide to either test or replace the DC-In board MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008 and Early 2009 DC-In Board Replacement. follow the first five steps to pull the bottom cover off and battery. Then jump down to Step 24. Carefully squeeze the connector out between the case and logic board (the cable connection is short!) Once you do inspect the contacts to see if they are burn’t or dirty. Clean them with a pencil eraser then carefully place the MagSafe charger connection onto the contacts making sure not short anything in the process. Where you able to get the MagSafe to light up? If not you’ll need to pickup the steps from Step 5 replacing it.

Then let us know if that fixed things.

I’m sure there is a way to measure the voltage off the board, but to be honest with you, these boards are so inexpensive on ebay you might be better off just buying one and out and out replacing it. I purchased one of these borads(or similar, i have a 2011 15” unibody mbp) for my computer just this week and I paid a grand total of $5.95 including shipping. If this doesn’t make the computer start working(remember that if it’s been powered down for a long period of time that you will need to let it charge for a little while before turning it on, but the light on the magsafe board should light up in a few seconds if it is working after you replace it) then you probably knocked something loose on your logic board, and that is neither a cheap nor easy fix, and you’d probably be better off just scrapping the thing.

If this answer helped you please give it a thumbs up, and if you need more assistance please post it to this thread so I can be notified.

Good luck!
