Need to get into DFU mode - broken home button

I need anyones help right now.

So here is the lowdown:

I have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running 4.2.1. Since it is tethered, i am forced to boot from redsn0w because I also have Winterboard installed which prevents the device from booting; just staying at the apple logo screen. To boot from redsn0w, you must put the device in DFU mode. <--- Thats my problem. The home button is not functional.

I have experience with fixing iPhones so i carefully went into the device while it was turned on (because it cannot turn off because it is basically bricked at the apple logo screen) and tried to fix the home button by simply bending the connectors up a little. Yet, that did not work. I can also not do what seems to be the most popular alternative of venturing through the firmware, changing some files around, and restoring it with that firmware. This is because my device is not recognized on the computer because it is stuck at the apple logo screen.

So, all I am looking for is a way to get my iPhone into DFU mode without using the home button.

Please help!! It will be greatly appreciated.

First, I'd try to diagnose the home button a little. If you hold multimeter probes to the button contacts, does the meter register any continuity when you press the home button? If so, then the switch itself works, and you need to try and clean the contacts. Otherwise, you can get a replacement front panel pretty cheaply (not including the LCD).

Short of that, though, you might try just lifting the front panel up just enough to touch the mating contact points with a metal object to short them together (ie, this should electrically be the same as pushing the button). If you look at step 3 of any of the guides, you should see the two gold squares between the fingers of the left hand; those are the button's mating contact points.

+ agree with cityzen. Chase I think you should get that button fixed so that all your other efforts are not hampered by a non-functioning piece of hardware.

the iphone will still work without the display on, so in theory you could disconnect it to work on the home button.. there's no reason why you can't turn this phone off is there? just because it is on the apple logo doesn't mean it wont go to sleep/energy save so you can take the front off...I'd be a bit cautious about trying to disconnect with the screen on in case you blow the backlight.
