Toggling Silent/mute switch doesn't work. Then mutes/unmutes by itself

My iphone 6s mute/silent switch doesnt respond correctly when I toggle it. Switch seems to be working fine mechanically (been cleaned as much as possible from the outside).

Further, the mute/silent function changes on its own. Sometimes ever couple seconds (even though switch not moving).

Seems the audio/power cable (and bracket) need to be replaced. Does the button also need to be replaced? Anyway I can open it up and the solution will be simpler?

It definitely sounds like the button on the flex is damaged. You can change this yourself.

This is not the simplest DIY repair so if you're all thumbs, I wouldn't recommend it as a lot can go wrong here. If you're a good fixer in general and have a delicate touch, you should certainly try it. The repair guide is here.

YES! I saw that. Thank you. So I dont have to replace the mechanical switch? Just the cable and bracket?

The physical actuator is on the flex. The button you push only pushes itself against the actuator.

I understand. Is it possible there is just a poor connection/dirt between the actuator and the button? Or does the flex definitely need replacing?

It's possible, sometimes it can get out of alignment. You'll have to open it up and take a closer look.

When I order the volume button cables I usually make sure it comes with the metal bracket and the vibrate switch attached with the metal bracket too.

What generally happens is that the plastic 4 holes gets loose from the metal bracket for the switch making it hard to switch or getting stuck in a certain position.

A worn out switch or teared ribbon cable may cause the vibrate switch to go on and off randomly.
