Boot loading bar gets halfway and hangs

I just bought a mid 2012 (non retina) MacBook Pro off eBay and when I go to turn it on, the fans come on fast and the Apple logo appears and once the loading bar gets halfway, it just hangs and gets stuck.

Is this a GPU issue? I didn’t think the non retina 2012’s were affected.

If it is a GPU issue, could I do the NVRAM and Kext fix like you can for the 2011 MacBook Pro’s to just use the integrated GPU?

Thanks in advance!

What happens if you hold "SHIFT" while you turn on the computer (boot into SAFE MODE).

I had same issue with my MacBook Pro 2010 ( from eBay ) after I open my MB I realised that there was liquid damaged so I simply buy different one. But if you want try you can do NVRAM fix as this Mac was also affected with GPU issue.

Oh really? I didn't think it would boot if there was liquid damage and I haven't been able to find anything about the non retina 2012 MacBook Pros having any GPU issue.

Well this is just my experience. Sorry I miss NONretina in first post. Did you try Recovery for OSX ( but full speed fan looks like some issue :( ) I should be able tomorrow turn on my old MB and I will let you know if I have same issue with fan.

That would be great, thank you!

Try running Apple Service Diagnostics on it. The correct version of ASD for a Mid 2012 is ASD 3S150.

Run the EFI version of ASD first and post results

Graphics problems are rare on these machines.

I have seen this issue before due to mismatched Intel ME region where the BIOS had been reprogrammed with one from another machine

The Intel ME region is a portion of the bootrom, is paired to the processor and gets married to the machine on first boot. Thankfully, the EFI can be reprogrammed with a working version and should resolve it

It is poor quality solder on the GPU. It eventually goes brittle then cracks. When the machine starts it uses the builtin graphics processor (less pwerfull) then as it decides it is time to boot the UI, it switches to the external chip that is faster and that is when you get the reset.

The only solution is replacing the GPU - I found a guy who did it for £180 and my machine has been awesome ever since. (apparently reflow which is a cheaper solution might work but seems that the problem comes back eventually)
