Will I ruin my battery if I put it into another waterdamaged phone?

Hi.

One of my friends dropped her iPhone SE into her sink and half an hour after her phone turned off and she couldn't charge it again. She then put it into a cloth in a week.

After a week she asked me if I could take her phone home with me and find the problem. I think that the problem is the charging port since it's only outputting 0,2 volts. If I take out the charging port and power it via her battery, the phone shows the "battery needs to be charged".

I have an iPhone SE too. Will I ruin my battery if I take it out of my phone and put it into her phone to recover data?

Being water damaged, there's no guarantee that the problem will only be the battery. Chances are it will have a logic board issue. Now depending on the issue, it may harm your battery although realistically, it won't. It's a chance you will have to take.

However, before doing anything else, I would decontaminate the logic board.

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

If that doesn't work, a professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

Hey Anders,

It depends on if her phone has severe enough damage. There may be a spot on the board where it is shorting out due to incomplete drying or damage, so I would recommend cleaning the logic board with a clean toothbrush and some isopropyl alcohol before trying to put your battery in it. Then, let it dry for another day. The only other risk is you may damage your battery when pulling it out, so make sure you have the right tools and follow this guide!

Hope this helps,

-Tanner
