Touch sensor not working on home button after I tried replacing screen

I started replacing the screen on an iPhone 7 but didn’t get farther than unscrewing the first cable cover. I didn’t take any cables apart I only unscrewed to screws after opening the screen. Now I put it back and turned it on and the home button won’t work. I can’t even close an app. What’s wrong?

Where is the first cable cover? On the screen or on the logic board?

You may have damaged the flex cable connecting the HomeButton to the logic board when you "opened" the device. The flexes don't have a lot of give and if you "turned over" (like a page in a book) the display assembly too quickly or forcefully, this could cause the flex to tear.

At this point, if you want to find the problem, you will have to go through this guide completely to remove the screen and carefully inspect the flex cable. If the flex is damaged, then only Apple can fix the TouchID. You'll have to re-assemble the device and bring it into the Apple Store.

It sounds as if @refectio is correct. You mention you opened it to perform a screen replacement. I would think you damaged the flex connector on the screen side (Better than home button side) & since you are replacing it anyway, the new LCD will have a god cable. Just be EXTREMELY careful removing the home button from the old screen and not damage it and you should have a successful repair. Use a bit of heat to soften the adhesive holding the home buton flex cable to the old screen and separate the connection to the home button and screen very carefully as well… (This is where the majority of mistakes are made).

Always turn off the phone and disconnect the battery before doing any work on the phone or making any connections or disconnections. Battery is first thing undone and the last thing before powering up to test.
