Screen not turning on when powering

Hey! So i recently got an iMac from a friend of mine who has let it be sitting for 2 years. At first when i powered it up, the screen was just black and i could only hear the fans spinning. So i tried powering it back down and up again and got it to work on the 4th try, where it booted up and was working perfectly. That is the only time ive managed to boot it though. So i was trying to reset SMC(?) and the PRAM with the apple BT keyboard, but that didnt work. So i tried getting a wired mouse and keyboard but then realised there is no power in the connections behind the iMac, so i could not get the keyboard or mouse to work.

If the USB ports don't have power its likely the PSU is gone. You'll need to open the system up and check the onboard diagnostic LED's? You'll find them on the bottom edge of the logic board on the right under some black tape.

Follow this IFIXIT guide to Step10 iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2308 Logic Board Replacement and refer to the second image of the logic board part where the tape is located.

  • LED 1 - Indicates that the trickle voltage from the power supply is detected by the main logic board. This LED will remain ON while the iMac is connected to the AC power. The LED will remain on even when the computer has been shut down or put to sleep. The LED will turn off only if the AC power is disconnected or the power supply is faulty.
  • LED 2 - Indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.
  • LED 3 - Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.
  • LED 4 - Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

Looks like i only have 3 LEDs on my board. looks like #1 #2 and #4. Only #1 and #2 is lighting up and not the last one. But im not hearing any startup chime. Although i have gotten the mac to boot up perfectly multiple times now. It's just sometimes it wont boot up at all.

Then your GPU is messed up!

I suspect you have the low end model which uses a unitized logic board where the GPU logic is integrated. The mid and high end models have an MXM GPU card. Sadly if that is the case the logic board needs replacing Vs the MXM card.

What should I do if only the fourth led is off?

@nelsonwilliam - Check your LVDS cable and the logic board connector one or both are damaged.

That might be. Is there any way to easily check if i either have the integrated one or the MXM card?

And by the way, tried to turn it home now that i got home from work. And it booted up, and all the 3 leds was lighting up. Guess i could say its the GPU then?
