How do I get Itunes to recognize my iPod?

I'm a deployed military member, hoping not to have to send my Ipod in to Apple, as I know it'll be a long turn around most likely.

It is stuck on the Connect to your computer, use Itunes to restore, white screen. It will only be periodically recognized by my computer when plugged in via USB. When it is, I cannot format it, because any time I try to right click on the device, it will not respond and I get the perpetual "blue circle" indicating windows explorer is searching/working. I have a feeling there may be no help for it, short of sending it in to Apple, but I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Sticky, have you tried to reset it? also, what shape is your battery in? Does your ipod react different when it is plugged into a wall adapter? Have you checked your cable as well as the dock connector on the ipod. Make sure there is no debris or corrosion in it. It does sound like you are having issues with your HDD. and there is no way you are goinbg to send it to Apple. If you can not repair it wherever you are, do feel free to notify my and you can send the iPod to me and I will fix it since I do have all the spare parts here, or I can send you the parts if you want to fix it yourself. The least I can do for any military member.

OT...Thanks much for the response, sir. Affirm, it resets and I can put it into disk mode and all that, but none of this seems to help. Interestingly, at least to me,

- de

Whoops...accidentally hit send there...anyway, interestingly, at least to me, it shows up as a replaceable disk drive in Computer when it's not in Disk Mode, but not when it IS in Disk Mode. It always shows up under disk drives in device manager as an Apple USB device. But it never shows in Itunes.

I have no reason to believe the battery is in bad shape and it doesn't seem to behave any different when plugged into a wall adapter. I will take another look at the dock connector, but I don't think it's damaged, at least outwardly. Thanks again for your time,

Sticky

Have you had a chance to run the diagnostics and see if it checks your HDD okay?

- de

Yes sir, if you mean the diagnostics you run through Itunes. It never finds the Ipod when it gets to that part. I'm starting to get the impression there is something indeed wrong with the HDD.

sorry to post this as an answer but it's to long for a comment

These directions are taken from Apple.com.

Putting iPod into Disk Mode

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?...

"1. Before manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode you should verify

that it has a charge, if not you need to either charge iPod before

continuing or connect it to power. You can either connect it to a

high-powered USB port, or plug the iPod Power Adapter into an

electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter.

2. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

3. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds

until the Apple logo appears.

4. When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons

and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons

until the Disk Mode screen appears.

5. '''Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your

computer; the screen on the iPod will change and say "Do not

disconnect"'''

If you are having difficulty putting an iPod model with a Click Wheel

into Disk Mode, set the iPod on a flat surface. Make sure that the

finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel.

Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the

outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center.

If you are still unable to put your iPod with a Click Wheel into Disk

Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one

finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button."

This of course can also be used in reverse to switch from Hard Drive

mode back to iPod mode.

Thanks, OT. Yeah, I have no issues putting my Ipod into Disk Mode, but this doesn't seem to get me any closer to solving the problem.

- de

Ok so when you get it in disk mode and then plug it into your computer does it change to the "do not disconnect" screen?

- de

Ah, yes, I believe it usually does, but let me check that again. Right now, I've got it in disk mode plugged into a wall adapter and it says "OK to disconnect"

- de

Once you have it in disk mode, plug it into your computer and see what it does

- de

Ok, plugged it in while in Disk Mode, and it immediately went to Do no disconnect as advertised. Also, every 10 seconds or so, an icon with two arrows going around in a circle shows up in the upper left corner. As I mentioned, the Ipod does not show up in Computer when in this mode, though I am able to see it in Device Manager.
