No Backlight; replaced inverter

After posting here with concerning my MBP17 with no backlight, it was suggested that I replace the inverter board. I ordered that from iFixIt and have replaced the board but no change...still boots up with no backlight. As I mentioned earlier, I tried replacing the screen with a known working screen assembly from another model (A1151 display assembly) but same results...no backlight.

Does this mean the motherboard is the culprit?

Hi Alan, I'm having similar issues with my MBPro 17" A1212, did you solve the problem?

- de

I gave up and decided to just use this laptop with an external monitor

The screen on my A1261 has been dim for some time (roughly half-strength), but I put up with it. About a month ago it went completely dark (though I can see the desktop by shining a flashlight at the screen).

I have tried re-setting PRAM (several times) and SMC as well. The computer works fine otherwise; I can connect to an external monitor and it displays just fine.

This seems pretty conclusively to indicate the inverter has gone bad, yes? I would think a failed fuse would have caused the screen to go dark immediately, rather than it functioning at a lower level of brightness for some time.

Hook it up to an external monitor and see if the problem persists. I suggested the inverter because you said no backlight (the inverter controls the backlight) instead of black screen. Can you see the desktop by holding a flashlight at an angle to the screen? Please give the last three letters of your serial number to EXACTLY identify your machine. Would you give us a history of this problem? Thanks, Sorry for the misunderstanding

Yes, I can see the log-in screen after booting it up (and then when I press the power button, I can see the options to shut down, restart, sleep, etc.). The last three digits of the serial are: W0J

The only additional history I can give you is that in Nov '09, my screen began getting brighter and brighter until it became all white (this happened in about a day). I could boot up with an external monitor but the laptop screen would remain completely white. Since it was still under AppleCare, they replaced the motherboard. In Jan '10, the same issue reoccured. AppleCare replaced the motherboard and the screen. About a month later (Feb '10) AppleCare replaced the screen once more just due to a smudge on the inside of the monitor screen. So, 2 new motherboards and 2 new screens.

No other issues with this MBP until Dec '10 and then the screen never turned on, booted but the screen was entirely dark (no light). I could still make out the image of the log-in screen in good light. I have another screen (from a A1151) that I believe is a working screen (but not confirmed) so I went ahead and attached this to see if it might work but got the same results (no backlight, but I could make out the log-in screen). Ordered an inverter board from iFixit and replaced it, but no change. I guess I don't know how to test the purchased inverter board to make sure that it is not also defective. I do know someone with the same model as mine, but asking him if I could take off his screen to test mine and see if it's the inverter is a bit extreme but maybe I need to ask.

with second monitor attached, I get video on the external monitor (see desktop image)

If you get a picture on the external, then your logic board and GPU are fine. The symptoms still indicate a bad inverter or bad inverter cables or connections. Try using a multimeter to test for continuity.

The part number for the A1212 inverter is 187-091-1

and for the A1151 187-098-1

These may just be iFixit numbers, but I did not see where they were interchangeable. Which on did you get?
