Hi,

According to the specifications you can upgrade the RAM to 2GB which may help improve performance for you.

(click on the toshiba_miniNB505-N500BL.pdf link towards the middle of the page in the link)

This is taken from the specifications.

Memory Upgrade ( Important Note)

Part Number Description

In order to upgrade, you will need to determine the current memory speed.

Upgrade using like memory speeds ONLY.

1) Locate gray part number label on bottom of machine

2) If there is a “D3” in the upper right hand corner of the label, then DDR3 memory is installed, upgrade using the following-

 PA3856U-1M2G Toshiba DDR3-1066MHz, 2GB Memory

3) All other units, assembled with DDR2 memory, upgrade using the following module-

 PA3669U-1M2G, Toshiba DDR2-800MHz, 2GB memory Module

Alternate Identification Method(Serial Number)

 PLL50U-01S008(4B131114K or greater, or a serial number starting with 5B , 6B ,7B , 8B) use DDR3

 PLL50U-01S008(4B131113K or less, or a serial number starting with 3B , 2B ,1B, ZA, YA, or XA)- use DDR2

Hi @dlpaine

You could always insert a SSD and upgrade the RAM to 2GB to get a bit more performance out of the laptop and then see how different OS’s work

Here are two links regarding the RAM upgrades depending on what version laptop you have DDR2 or DDR3.

Also if you get a SSD you may have to pad out the enclosure a bit because it appears that the enclosure is for 9mm SATA drives and most SSD are 7mm so it may need to be lined up correctly to the connector

I don't know how Linux would run on 1GB

I've used Linux Mint on my netbook which has an Atom 1.6MHz CPU to see if it was any better than the Win 7 Starter that was on it when I got it. I had upgraded the RAM to 2GB (max) very soon after I got the netbook (back in 2011) as it was too slow with 1GB even then with Win 7 Starter but the RAM increase solved that so it was OK using Mint too, but I found that I didn't like using Linux OS. But that's just me

It now has Win 10 installed and it's starting to slow down a bit but when used just for emails and surfing the web it suffices and Skype seems to work OK with no problems. This is the only PC I have with a webcam ;-)

Also there are more 3rd party programs that support Win OS than Linux but again this depends on what programs you want to run.

Here's a link that may help you decide.
